Just Had a Scary Moment

Not an "OMG" moment or "There's Blood Everywhere" moment, but more of an "Oh Crap" moment.

I had the PC on standby and was coming back to use it after a few hours. Moved the mouse to get things started and the damn thing just shut itself off. OK, not too bad until the damn thing wouldn't turn on again. I was like, "Oh crap, what about my fics?" (some had been worked on since I saved to disc). Then it was "Damn, my iTunes library!"

I ended up turning off the surge protector for about 10-15 minutes and, as you can see, it turned back on. Whew! No I can sleep better tonight.

Is this a sign I should look to a new PC?

Hope everyone had a great holiday!

I don't know about the new computer, but you definitely had better back up all your files. Plus, if your computer doesn't have a restore disk, you might want to go help and read how to make one.

How old is your PC? If it's not that old, you might just need it blown out or re-formatted.

The PC I think is about 4 years old. I just had a new memory card put in a few weeks ago so I'm sure they cleaned out the cobwebs. As for a restore disk, I don't think that would have done much good at the time as I couldn't get it to turn on. Thanks for your ideas though

(Glad you didn't lose your stuff. Try feeding the hamster.)

If it's one of those hamster-powered jobs you might want to look into a new laptop. :-) With one of those modern as tomorrow flash memory sticks. :-)

I think the hamster has company as it's moving faster now. And where were you in my time of need? I was looking for advice from Ed. You weren't home, you didn't answer your cell...

I think I'm ok for now. I'll back up those fics and avoid using the "standby" option.
