EXT. LONDON STREET, DAY
DONNA NOBLE walks down a crowded street wearing a business suit and clutching a clipboard. On another street, walking in the opposite direction, is the DOCTOR, hands in pockets. DONNA stops in front of a tall, glass-fronted office block that houses Adipose Industries. The DOCTOR looks up at what seems to be the same building from the opposite side. DONNA enters through a revolving door.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, LOBBY
RECEPTIONIST: Good morning, Adipose Industries.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, BACK ENTRANCE
The DOCTOR uses the sonic screwdriver on a fire exit to gain entry.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, HALL
DONNA sees a security guard and holds up an ID card.
DONNA: Donna Noble, Health and Safety
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB LEVEL CORRIDOR
The DOCTOR holds up his psychic paper for a guard.
DOCTOR: John Smith, Health and Safety.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, THEATRE
MISS FOSTER: Adipose Industries-the 21st century way to lose weight.
The camera pans up from an Adipose Industries sign on the back of a podium to the back of a woman's legs. She is wearing black heels and a black business suit. She is speaking to a group of people, one of whom is DONNA.
MISS FOSTER: No exercise, no diet, no pain. Just lifelong freedom from fat.
She is wearing black glasses and has her blonde hair in a tight bun. Behind her is a screen bearing the Adipose logo.
MISS FOSTER: The Holy Grail of the modern age. And here it is. (She holds up a capsule between her thumb and forefinger.) You just take one capsule, one capsule a week for three weeks and the fat, as they say...
She turns to the screen behind her and a male voice states the pitch as the words appear on the screen.
MALE VOICE: The Fat Just Walks Away.
A reporter sitting near DONNA speaks up.
PENNY CARTER: Excuse me, Miss Foster, if I could? I'm Penny Carter, science correspondent for The Observer. There are 1000 diet pills on the market, 1000 conmen stealing people's money. How do we know the fat isn't going straight into your bank account?
MISS FOSTER: Oh, Penny, if cynicism burned up calories, we'd all be as thin as rakes. But if you want the science, I'll oblige.
The house lights dim and the screen begins an animation describing the process.
MALE VOICE: Adipose Industries. The Adipose capsule is composed of a synthesized mobilizing lipase bound to a large protein molecule...
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, PROJECTION ROOM
The camera pans up from DONNA in the audience to the DOCTOR watching from the projection room.
MALE VOICE: ...the mobilizing lipase breaks up the triglycerides stored in the adipose cells which then...
The DOCTOR holds up psychic paper to projectionist.
DOCTOR: Health and Safety. Film department.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, THEATRE
MISS FOSTER: 100% legal. 100% effective.
PENNY CARTER: But can I just ask, how many people have taken the pills to date?
MISS FOSTER: We've already got one million customers within the Greater London area alone but from next week, we start rolling out nationwide. The future starts here and Britain will be thin.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, CALL CENTRE
A large room lined with cubicles and busy with telemarketers selling their product.
TELEMARKETERS: Good morning. I represent Adipose Industries...
DONNA walks through with her clipboard and chooses a cubicle occupied by a young man.
MALE TELEMARKETER: ...That's a three-week course of pills for the special price of £45.
DONNA takes a seat and holds up her ID.
DONNA: Donna Noble, Health and Safety. Don't mind me.
The DOCTOR also arrives in the call centre and picks a cubicle where a young woman is on the phone.
FEMALE TELEMARKETER: ...We deliver within three working days registered post.
The DOCTOR leans over with psychic paper and whispers.
DOCTOR: John Smith, Health and Safety. Don't mind me.
MALE TELEMARKETER: ...Box comes with 21 days of pills, a full information pack and our special free gift-an Adipose Industries pendant.
DONNA takes the pendant from the box and dangles it by the chain. It is shaped like the capsule.
FEMALE TELEMARKETER: ...It's made of 18-carat gold and it's yours free. (She watches the DOCTOR as he examines the pendant.)
No, we don't give away pens. Sorry, no, I can't make an exception to that.
DONNA pockets the pendant.
DONNA: I'll just need to keep this for testing. And I just need a list of your customers. Could you print it off?
MALE TELEMARKETER: I suppose so.
DONNA: Where's the printer?
MALE TELEMARKETER: Just over there by the plant.
DONNA: (stands) Which plant? That plant?
MALE TELEMARKETER: Yeah, that's the one.
DONNA: Lovely. (sits back down)
DOCTOR: (stands in his cubicle) That's the printer there?
FEMALE TELEMARKETER: By the plant, yeah.
DOCTOR: Brilliant. (sits)
DONNA: (stands) Does it need a code? Last place I worked the printer needed a code.
MALE TELEMARKETER: No, I can do it from here.
DONNA sits.
DOCTOR: (stands) Has it got paper?
FEMALE TELEMARKETER: Yeah. Jimbo keeps it stocked.
The DOCTOR sits. MISS FOSTER enters followed by two security guards.
MISS FOSTER: Excuse me, everyone. If I could have your attention. (Everyone stands and the DOCTOR peers over the cubicle wall while MISS FOSTER looks the other way.) On average, you're each selling 40 Adipose packets per day. (turns her head and the DOCTOR ducks while DONNA now peers) It's not enough. I want 100 sales per person per day. And if not...(turns head, DONNA ducks, DOCTOR peers) you'll be replaced. (the male telemarketer looks curiously at DONNA) 'Cause if anyone's good at trimming the fat, it's me. Now...back to it.
MISS FOSTER leaves at the others get back to selling.
DOCTOR: Anyway...if you could print that off, thanks.
DONNA: So if you could just print off that list, I'll get out of your way. Lovely, thanks then. (gets up and walks towards printer) See ya.
DOCTOR: (stands) Thanks then. Oooh-(she pulls him down into his seat so he misses DONNA walk by. The woman hands him a slip of paper) (What's that?
FEMALE TELEMARKETER: My telephone number.
DOCTOR: What for?
FEMALE TELEMARKETER: Health and Safety. You be Health and I'll be Safety.
DONNA gets the list from the printer.
DOCTOR: Ah...Ah...but that contravenes, um, Paragraph Five, Subsection C. Sorry.
DONNA leaves as the DOCTOR backs out. He goes to the printer but there's no list. He returns and peers over her cubicle, a goofy grin on his face.
DOCTOR: (laughs) Me again.
EXT. NIGHT, STACY CAMPBELL'S HOME
DONNA knocks on a front door. It is answered by a heavyset woman.
DONNA: Stacy Campbell?
STACY: Who wants to know?
DONNA: Uh, my name's Donna. I represent Adipose Industries. (quickly holds up ID) And you're on the list of our valued customers.
EXT. NIGHT, ROGER DAVEY'S HOME
The DOCTOR is at another customer's front door.
DOCTOR: Mr Roger Davey, I'm calling on behalf of Adipose Industries. (holds up psychic paper) Just need to ask you a few questions.
INT. STACY CAMPBELL'S LIVING ROOM
STACY is getting ready to go out. DONNA is sitting on a sofa.
STACY: It's been fantastic! I started the pills on Thursday. Five days later, I've lost 11 pounds.
DONNA: And no side effects or anything?
STACY: No, I feel fantastic. It's a new lease on life. What do you think of these earrings? Do they work?
DONNA: Yeah. Lovely.
INT. ROGER DAVEY'S LIVING ROOM
ROGER is sitting on a chair while the DOCTOR paces in front of him.
ROGER: I've been on the pills two weeks now. I've lost 14 kilos.
DOCTOR: That's the same amount every day.
ROGER: One kilo exactly. You wake up and it's disappeared overnight. Well, technically speaking, it's gone by ten past one in the morning.
DOCTOR: What makes you say that?
ROGER: That's when I get woken up. Might as well weigh myself at the same time.
INT. STACY CAMPBELL'S LIVING ROOM
STACY is primping in the mirror.
DONNA: Are you going on a date?
STACY: I'm doing the opposite. I'm dumping him. I can do better than him now. (chuckles) Right. Won't be long. If the taxi beeps, give me a shout. (leaves the room)
INT. ROGER DAVEY'S LIVING ROOM
ROGER: It is driving me mad. Ten minutes past one every night, bang on the dot, without fail, the burglar alarm goes off.
The DOCTOR raises an eyebrow.
EXT. NIGHT, ROGER DAVEY'S HOME
The DOCTOR and ROGER are standing outside looking up at the alarm.
ROGER: I've had experts in. I've had it replaced. I've even phoned Watchdog. But no, ten past one in the morning, off it goes.
DOCTOR: But with no burglaries.
ROGER: Nothing. I've given up looking.
DOCTOR: Tell me, Roger...have you got a cat flap?
INT. ROGER DAVEY'S FRONT HALL
The DOCTOR and ROGER are looking through the opening while the DOCTOR holds the flap up with the sonic screwdriver.
ROGER: It was here when I bought the house. I never bothered with it really.
The camera angle changes to show both men lying on the floor on their stomachs before switching back to seeing through the flap.
ROGER: I'm not a cat person.
DOCTOR: (murmurs) No, I've met cat people. You're nothing like them.
ROGER: Is that what it is, though? Cats getting inside the house?
DOCTOR: Well, thing about cat flaps is they don't just let things in; they let things out as well.
ROGER: Like what?
DOCTOR: "The fat just walks away." (lets flap down and it swings back and forth)
INT. STACY CAMPBELL'S BATHROOM/LIVING ROOM
STACY is in the bathroom upstairs while DONNA is sitting on the sofa downstairs.
STACY: Won't be long!
DONNA: Oh, that's all right!
Waiting, DONNA pulls out the Adipose pendant and holds it up to the light. Upstairs, STACY applies lipstick. DONNA absently twists the pendant and STACY puts a hand to her stomach. DONNA keeps twisting. STACY sees her stomach bulge like something pushing outwards.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
An alarm goes off. A monitor on MISS FOSTER'S desk pinpoints a location. She speaks into a wrist communicator.
MISS FOSTER: We have unscheduled parthenogenesis.
EXT. NIGHT, ROGER DAVEY'S HOME
The DOCTOR is saying good night to ROGER DAVEY.
DOCTOR: Well, thanks for your help. Tell you what, maybe you should lay off the pills for a week or so. (a gadget in his pocket beeps and he pulls it out. Red lights are blinking.) Ooh, gotta go-sorry! (runs off down the street)
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER: Send out the collection squad. Bring them home.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, PARKING GARAGE
A dark SUV pulls out with lights flashing and siren blaring.
EXT. NIGHT, RESIDENTIAL STREET
The DOCTOR runs down the street holding his gadget in front of him.
INT. STACY CAMPBELL'S BATHROOM/LIVING ROOM
In the bathroom, STACY moans as she watches her stomach bulge. A little creature breaks free and falls into the sink. DONNA is still on the sofa.
DONNA: You all right up there?
STACY: (stunned) Yeah!
The creature in the sink coos.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER: The Adipose has been witnessed. Activating full parthenogenesis.
INT. STACY CAMPBELL'S LIVING ROOM
DONNA stands and walks towards the door.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER pulls out a pendant.
INT. STACY CAMPBELL'S LIVING ROOM
DONNA pauses in the open doorway to the hall.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER activates the pendant.
INT. STACY CAMPBELL'S BATHROOM/LIVING ROOM
STACY feels another bulge at her side and another Adipose pulls itself free.
STACY: (stunned) Wh-What?
DONNA stands at the foot of the stairs. In the bathroom, there are now two Adipose in the sink cooing. One waves.
STACY: What are you? What are you?
DONNA: I like what you've done to the hall. Stacy? (climbs stairs) You all right?
STACY is overwhelmed by bulges all over her body and tried to push them back.
DONNA: I wouldn't mind a little visit myself.
STACY is still fighting the bulges. DONNA arrives at the top of the stairs.
DONNA: Everything all right in there?
Another bulge starts at her shoulder. DONNA knocks on the bathroom door.
DONNA: It's only me. Do you mind if I pop to the loo?
There are more bulges all over STACY'S body.
DONNA: Stacy?
STACY whimpers and pushes at the bulges.
STACY: Help me! Oh, my God, help me!
DONNA rattles the locked doorknob.
DONNA: What is it? What's wrong? Stacy!
STACY screams and literally falls to pieces, as she becomes a number of Adipose. DONNA breaks open the door and enters the room to see it empty, Stacy's clothes on the floor. At the window she sees an Adipose who waves at her before dropping down outside.
EXT. NIGHT, RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD
The Adipose Industries SUV drives down a road. The DOCTOR runs across a road then backtracks. He smacks the gadget and blows on it to get it to work again before running off. The SUV arrives and Miss Foster's GUARDS step out, taking a net and box from the back. DONNA, trying to find the Adipose, leaves Stacy's back garden and enters an alley. She hears the creatures as well as trash bins falling over. She runs after the sound. The DOCTOR is nearby following the readings on his gadget, tracking the Adipose. At one point he stops and stares at it to make sure it is working properly. The GUARDS catch the Adipose, closing them in the box and placing it in the back of the SUV. They drive down the road and pass a dejected DONNA. They also nearly run down the DOCTOR who is running down the middle of the road. The DOCTOR'S gadget blinks and beeps and he chases after the SUV. He cuts down an alley but loses them. DONNA has made her way back to the street in front of STACY'S house. A taxi pulls up.
TAXI DRIVER: Stacy Campbell?
DONNA: No. She's gone.
TAXI DRIVER: Gone where?
DONNA: No. She's gone.
TAXI DRIVER: Oh great. Thanks for nothing. (turns off light and drives away)
An aerial shot shows the DOCTOR and DONNA are only yards apart. They walk off in opposite directions.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER sits at her desk flanked by her two guards.
MISS FOSTER: It seems we have a case of industrial espionage. One touch and the capsule bio-tunes itself to its owner but someone...must have introduced a second, raw capsule. (watches footage of the DOCTOR and DONNA'S visits.) Therefore, one of these people is a thief. There. (pauses footage) Oh, yes, there she is. Now...(sighs) what should we do with her?
INT. NOBLE HOME, FRONT HALL
DONNA arrives home at her mother's. She is drained, still stunned by what she witnessed. She rests against the wall. SYLVIA is in the kitchen.
SYLVIA: (yells from the kitchen) And what time is this?
DONNA: (rolls eyes) How old am I?
SYLVIA: (pops out from the kitchen) Not old enough to use a phone.
INT. NOBLE HOME, KITCHEN
DONNA sits at the kitchen table with a cup of tea while SYLVIA busies herself around the room.
SYLVIA: I thought you were only moving back for a couple of weeks. Look at you. I mean, you're never gonna find a flat, not while you're on the dole. It's no good sitting there, dressed up, looking like you're job-hunting. You've gotta do something. It's not like the 1980s. No one's unemployed these days, except you! How long did that job with Health and Safety last? Two days and then you walk out! "I have other plans!" Well, I've not seen them. And it's no good sitting there dreaming. No one's gonna come along with a magic wand and make your life all better.
DONNA: (sips tea) Where's Granddad?
SYLVIA: Where do you think he is? Up the hill. He's always up the hill.
EXT. NIGHT, HILLTOP
DONNA walks up the hill to where her grandfather has a small shack set up for his stargazing. He is WILF, the newspaper vendor from "Voyage of the Damned".
WILF: Aye, aye, here comes trouble.
DONNA: (salutes) Permission to board ship, sir?
WILF: (salutes) Permission granted. Was she nagging ya?
DONNA: (scoffs) Big time. Brought you a thermos.
WILF: (sits on folding chair) Ooh, ta. (takes thermos)
DONNA: You seen anything? (gets tarp from shack)
WILF: Yeah, I've got Venus with an apparent magnitude of minus 3.5. At least that's what it says in my little book. (DONNA spreads tarp on the ground and kneels) Here, come see. Go on. (DONNA looks through the telescope) That's the only planet in the solar system named after a woman.
DONNA: Good for her. How far away is that?
WILF: Oh, it's about 26 million miles. But we'll get there...one day. Hundred years' time we'll be striding out amongst the stars, jiggling about with all them aliens. Just you wait.
DONNA: (chuckles) You really believe all that stuff, don't you?
WILF: They're all over the place these days. If I wait here long enough...
DONNA: I don't suppose you've seen a little blue box?
WILF: Is that slang for something?
DONNA: (laughs) No, I mean it. If you ever see a little blue box flying up there in the sky, you shout for me, Gramps. Oh, you just shout.
WILF: (chuckles) Gee, I don't understand half the things you say these days.
DONNA: Nor me.
WILF: No. Fair dues. You've had a funny old time of it lately. There was poor old-what's his name-Lance, bless him. That barmy old Christmas. Phew. I wish you'd tell us what really happened.
DONNA: I know. It's just...the things I've seen...sometimes I think I'm going mad. I mean, even tonight, I was in a...(sighs) Doesn't matter.
WILF: Well, you're not yourself, I'll give you that. You just...you seem to be drifting, sweetheart.
DONNA: I'm not drifting. I'm waiting.
WILF: What for?
DONNA: The right man.
WILF: (guffaws) Same old story. A man!
DONNA: (laughs) No! I don't mean like that. But he's real. I've seen him. I've met him. Just once...and then (sighs) I let him fly away.
WILF: Well there you are. Go and find him.
DONNA: I've tried. He's...nowhere.
WILF: Oh, it's not like you to give up. You know, remember when you was about six years old, your mother said "No holiday this year" so off you toddled on your own and got on a bust-to Strathclyde! Ha! We had the police out and everything! Where's she gone then? Where's that girl, eh?
DONNA: You're right. 'Cause he's still out there somewhere and I'll find him, Gramps. Even if I have to wait 100 years, I'll find him. (looks up to the sky)
INT. TARDIS
The DOCTOR is examining the pendant with a magnifying glass
DOCTOR: Ooh, fascinating. Seems to be a bio-fit digital stitch specifically for-
The DOCTOR looks up and sees he's alone in the TARDIS, no one there to listen to his explanations. He inhales deeply and taps the magnifying glass against his leg.
EXT. DAY, NOBLE HOME
DONNA is dressed in a business suit and is getting into her car. SYLVIA appears at the door in a robe.
SYLVIA: It's my turn for the car. What do you need it for?
DONNA: (starts engine) A quick getaway.
INT. TARDIS
The DOCTOR moves about the console pressing buttons and switching levers as well as banging it with a hammer.
EXT. DAY, BACK STREET
DONNA parks and locks the car and heads off for Adipose Industries. The TARDIS materializes behind it while she's gone. DONNA enters through the revolving door and the DOCTOR through a fire exit.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, CALL CENTRE
DONNA strides through the call centre.
DONNA: Morning!
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL
The DOCTOR hides in a maintenance cupboard in the basement, locking it with the sonic screwdriver.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, LADIES' ROOM
DONNA enters a stall and prepares for a long wait.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, CALL CENTRE
MISS FOSTER and the guards walk through.
MISS FOSTER: Keep an eye out. She'll be back. And then...she's mine.
They walk past a clock that reads 9:30. Time passes and it's now 6:10 and everyone is leaving for the day.
FEMALE TELEMARKETER: See you tomorrow.
MALE TELEMARKETER: 'Night.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL
The DOCTOR unlocks the cupboard and steps out, looks around, stretches his neck and sets off.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, LADIES' ROOM/NOBLE HOUSE
DONNA stretches her neck and steps out of the stall. Her mobile rings. She ducks back inside.
DONNA: (whispers) Not now.
SYLVIA: (normal) I need the car. Where are you?
DONNA: (whispers) I can't. I'm busy.
SYLVIA: (normal) Why are you whispering?
WILF is listening in on the conversation as he prepares to go up the hill.
DONNA: (whispers) I'm in church.
SYLVIA: (normal) What are you doing in church?
DONNA: (whispers) Praying.
SYLVIA: (normal) A bit late for that, madam.
WILF: What's she in church for?
SYLVIA: (normal) Hush, you. Go up the hill. (WILF takes his things and leaves) But I need the car. I'm going out with Suzette. She's asked all the Wednesday Girls. Apparently she's been on those Adipose pills. She says she looks marvellous.
DONNA hears the door to the ladies' room burst open and shuts off the phone. MISS FOSTER enters with her guards who are armed with rifles.
MISS FOSTER: We know you're in here so why don't you make this easy and show yourself? (DONNA pulls her feet up onto the seat) I'm waiting...I warn you, I'm not a patient woman so out you come. Right. We'll do it the hard way. (to guards) Get her.
The guards begin kicking open the stall doors. DONNA flinches each time as they get closer. They open one and there is PENNY CARTER.
MISS FOSTER: There you are. (DONNA is shocked)
PENNY: I've been through the records, Foster. There's something about those pills you're not telling us.
MISS FOSTER: Oh, I think I'll be conducting this interview, Penny.
MISS FOSTER walks out with one guard as the other follows with PENNY. Once they are gone, DONNA exits the stall.
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, ROOF
The DOCTOR arrives on the roof. He spies the gondola used for cleaning the windows and gets in. He then starts to lower it.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, CALL CENTRE
MISS FOSTER, PENNY and the guards walk through the call centre. PENNY struggles against the guards holding her.
PENNY: You've no right to do this! Let me go!
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SIDE OF THE BUILDING
The DOCTOR reaches the floor he wants and stops the machine. He is right outside Miss Foster's office. The door to the room opens and he ducks.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER enters followed by the guards with PENNY.
PENNY: This is ridiculous.
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SIDE OF THE BUILDING
The DOCTOR pulls out his stethoscope and puts it on.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
One of the guards places a chair in the middle of the room facing Miss Foster's desk.
MISS FOSTER: Sit there.
PENNY: I'm phoning my editor.
MISS FOSTER: I said, "sit". (one of the guards pushes her into the seat)
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SIDE OF THE BUILDING
The DOCTOR listens through the stethoscope.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
PENNY: You can't tie me up! What sort of a country do you think this is?
MISS FOSTER: Oh, it's a beautifully fat country. And believe me, I've travelled a long way to find obesity on this scale.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, HALL OUTSIDE MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
DONNA enters the hall cautiously, hearing the voices.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
PENNY: So come on then, Miss Foster. Those pills-what are they?
MISS FOSTER: Well, you might as well have a scoop since you'll never see it printed. (picks up capsule between thumb and forefinger) This...is the spark of life.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, HALL OUTSIDE MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
DONNA walks closer to the door.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
PENNY: And what's that supposed to mean?
MISS FOSTER: Officially, the capsule attracts all the fat cells and flushes them away.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, HALL OUTSIDE MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
DONNA squats at the base of the door.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER: Well, it certainly attracts them, that part's true, but it binds the fat together and galvanizes it to form a body.
PENNY: Well, what do you mean, "a body"?
MISS FOSTER: I'm surprised you never asked about my name. I chose it well. "Foster" as in "foster mother". And these... (reaches into a desk drawer and takes out an Adipose) are my children.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, HALL OUTSIDE MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
DONNA lifts herself up to peer through the window in the door.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
PENNY: You-You're kidding me. I-What the hell is that?
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SIDE OF THE BUILDING
The DOCTOR peers through the window from the gondola.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER gets up from her desk and walks around in front of it.
MISS FOSTER: Adipose. It's called...an Adipose. Made out of fat.
PENNY: (struggles against bonds) I don't understand.
The conversation fades as the DOCTOR and DONNA see each other across the office. They mouth a conversation.
DOCTOR: Donna?
DONNA: Doctor!
DOCTOR: But...w-what?
DONNA: Oh...my...God!
DOCTOR: How?
DONNA: It's me! (points to herself)
DOCTOR: Yes, I can see that. (points to his eyes)
DONNA: Oh, this is brilliant! (two thumbs up)
DOCTOR: What the hell are you doing there? (points at her)
DONNA: I was looking for you. (points at him)
DOCTOR: (points to self) What for?
DONNA: I read it (mimes reading) on the Internet. (mimes typing. The DOCTOR nods, confused)...is weird...crept along...heard them talking...(mimes arrival and the DOCTOR stares) You! (The DOCTOR nods numbly) 'Cause they-(turns to see MISS FOSTER watching them)
MISS FOSTER: Are we interrupting you?
The DOCTOR and DONNA look at each other then the DOCTOR jerks his head.
DOCTOR: Run!
DONNA runs off.
MISS FOSTER: Get her! (The DOCTOR sonics the lock on the door) And him!
The DOCTOR uses the sonic screwdriver to speed the gondola upwards.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, STAIRWELL
DONNA runs up the stairwell.
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, ROOF
The DOCTOR arrives back on the roof and runs inside.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
The guards shoot the door before kicking it open. MISS FOSTER calmly follows them out.
PENNY: (struggles against bonds) What about me?!
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, STAIRWELL
The DOCTOR and DONNA meet on the stairs and hug.
DONNA: (high-pitched) Oh my God! I don't believe it! You've even got the same suit. (normal) Don't you ever change?
DOCTOR: Yeah, thanks, Donna. Not right now. (looks over the rail and sees the guards coming) Just like old times! (they run upstairs)
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, ROOF
The DOCTOR and DONNA exit onto the roof.
DONNA: 'Cause I thought "How do you find the Doctor?" (The DOCTOR sonics the access door) And then I just thought "Look for trouble and he'll show up". (follows him to the gondola) So I looked everywhere-you name it. (The DOCTOR works on the controls) UFO sightings, crop circles, sea monsters-I found them all. I heard about the bees disappearing and I thought "Bet he's connected". 'Cause the thing is, Doctor, I believe it all now. You opened my eyes. All those amazing things out there, I believe them all. Well, apart from that replica of the Titanic flying over Buckingham Palace Christmas Day, I mean, that's got to be a hoax-
DOCTOR: What do you mean, bees are disappearing? (climbs the steps to the gondola)
DONNA: I dunno, that's what it says on the Internet, but on the same site, there were all these conspiracy theories about Adipose Industries. And I thought, "Let's take a look".
DOCTOR: In you get.
DONNA: What? In that thing?
DOCTOR: Yes, in that thing.
DONNA: But if we got down in that thing they'll just call us back up again.
DOCTOR: No, 'cause I've locked the controls in a sonic cage. I'm the only one that can control it. (DONNA climbs the steps and gets in) Unless she has a sonic device of her own which is very unlikely.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, ROOF ACCESS CORRIDOR
MISS FOSTER is following her guards. When the guards can't open the door, she takes out a small sonic device and uses it on the door.
MISS FOSTER: Out of my way.
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, ROOF
Outside the guards stand armed but the roof is empty. MISS FOSTER hears the gondola mechanism. She looks over the side.
MISS FOSTER: Ooh. Oh, I don't think so. (uses sonic device on cable causing sparks)
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SIDE OF THE BUILDING
The DOCTOR and DONNA grip the sides of the gondola as it drops out of control. The DOCTOR uses the sonic screwdriver to stop it. They stand slowly and are even with a window.
DOCTOR: (uses sonic screwdriver on window) Hold on! Hold on! We can get in through the window.
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, ROOF
MISS FOSTER: (into comms) Deadlock the building.
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SIDE OF THE BUILDING
DOCTOR: Can't get it open!
DONNA: (picks up spanner) Smash it then! (bangs spanner against window)
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, ROOF
MISS FOSTER aims her sonic device at one of the cables holding the gondola. It sparks and catches fire.
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SIDE OF THE BUILDING
DONNA: (looks up) They're cutting the cable!
The cable snaps, the gondola tips and DONNA falls out the side. She grabs hold of a metal bar at the end of a cable still attached to the gondola.
DOCTOR: Donna!
DONNA: Doctor!
DOCTOR: Hold on!
DONNA: I am!
The DOCTOR tries to pull her back up.
DONNA: Doctor!
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, ROOF
MISS FOSTER walks around to the cable on the other side.
MISS FOSTER: Now for the other one.
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SIDE OF THE BUILDING
The DOCTOR positions himself at the top of the gondola and, when MISS FOSTER holds out her sonic device towards the other cable, the DOCTOR aims the sonic screwdriver at her hand, causing her to drop the device. The DOCTOR put the screwdriver in his pocket, leans back and catches the other device in one hand. He clenches it in his teeth before climbing the cable up to a window. He uses Foster's sonic device on the window.
DONNA: I'm gonna fall!
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
Still tied to a chair, PENNY turns her head and sees DONNA'S legs dangling just outside the window.
PENNY: What the hell is going on?
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SIDE OF THE BUILDING
DONNA: This is all your fault! I should've stayed at home!
DOCTOR: (opens window) I won't be a minute! (climbs through the window and falls to the floor)
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, ROOF
MISS FOSTER: (holds injured hand) Yes, he's slippery, that one. Time we find out who he is.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, STAIRWELL
The DOCTOR races back down the stairs.
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SIDE OF THE BUILDING
DONNA looks down at the cars passing far beneath her.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
The DOCTOR runs straight to the window.
PENNY: Is anyone gonna tell me what's going on?
DOCTOR: What are you, a journalist? (uses screwdriver on window)
PENNY: Yes.
DOCTOR: Well, make it up. (opens window and grabs DONNA'S legs)
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SIDE OF THE BUILDING
DONNA: Get off!
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
DOCTOR: I've got you! I've got you! Stop kicking!
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, STAIRWELL
MISS FOSTER and the guards are heading downstairs.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
The DOCTOR pulls DONNA inside and steadies her.
DONNA: I was right. It's always like this with you, isn't it?
DOCTOR: Oh yes!
The DOCTOR and DONNA run out of the room.
PENNY: Oi!
DOCTOR: (pops round the doorway) Sorry. (uses sonic screwdriver on the ropes and they fall away as he leaves. Pops head around again.) Now do yourself a favour. Get out.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, CALL CENTRE
MISS FOSTER and the guards enter the call centre from one end while the DOCTOR and DONNA run in from the other. They stop and face each other.
MISS FOSTER: Well then...at last.
DONNA: (gives a little wave) Hello.
DOCTOR: Nice to meet you. I'm the Doctor
DONNA: And I'm Donna.
MISS FOSTER: Partners in crime. (the DOCTOR and DONNA look at each other) And evidently off-worlders judging by your sonic technology.
DOCTOR: (pats pockets) Oh, yes, I've still got your sonic pen. (pulls it out of coat pocket) Nice! I like it. Sleek. It's kinda sleek.
DONNA: (examines it) Oh, it's definitely sleek.
DOCTOR: Yeah, and if you were to sign you real name, that would be...
MISS FOSTER: Matron Cofelia of the Five-Straighten Classibindi Nursery Fleet. Intergalactic Class.
DOCTOR: A wet nurse...using humans as surrogates.
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA
I've been employed by the Adiposian First Family to foster a new generation after their breeding planet was lost.
DOCTOR: What do you mean, "lost"? How do you lose a planet?
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: Oh, the politics are none of my concern. I'm just here to take care of the children on behalf of the parents.
DONNA: What? Like an outer space super-nanny?
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: Yes, if you like.
DONNA: So...these little things, they're, they're made our of fat, yeah, but that woman, Stacy Campbell, there was nothing left of her.
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: Oh, in a crisis, the Adipose can convert bone and hair and internal organs. Makes them a little bit sick, poor things.
DONNA: What about poor Stacy?
DOCTOR: Seeding a Level 5 planet is against galactic law.
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: Are you threatening me?
DOCTOR: I'm trying to help you, Matron. This is your one chance 'cause if you don't call this off, then I'll have to stop you.
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: I hardly think you can stop bullets. (the guards aim their rifles at the DOCTOR and DONNA)
DOCTOR: (holds hands up in front of him) Hold on! Hold on! Hold on! Hold on! One more thing before dying. Do you know what happens if you hold two identical sonic devices against each other?
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: No.
DOCTOR: Nor me. Let's find out.
The DOCTOR holds the two sonic devices head-to-head and switches them on. All four around him clutch their heads in pain. He grits his teeth. A glass window shatters. DONNA pushes him to get him to stop.
DONNA: Come on! (they run)
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: (into comms) I'm advancing the birth plan. We're going into premature labour.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
PENNY is going through files.
PENNY: Cellular ossification.
MISS FOSTER enters just as PENNY heads for the door.
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: Tie her up.
The two guards grab her by the arms.
PENNY: Oh, you're kidding me!
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL
The DOCTOR and DONNA run through a basement corridor. The DOCTOR stops at a maintenance cupboard and begins throwing stuff into the corridor.
DONNA: Well...that's one solution-hide in a cupboard. I like it.
DOCTOR: (at the back wall) I've been hacking into this thing all day (door slides open to reveal alien machinery) 'cause the Matron's got a computer core running through the centre of the building. Triple-deadlocked but now I've got this (holds up Matron's sonic pen) I can get into it.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
The painting behind the desk slides open to reveal the same computer core the DOCTOR is working on.
PENNY: (tied to chair) What does that thing do?
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: It's the inducer. We had planned to seed millions but if that man's an alien, then he's alerted the Shadow Proclamation, the first one million humans will have to do. (to guards) Find him. And the woman. Don't waste time, just kill them. (guards leave)
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL CUPBOARD
DOCTOR: She's wired up the whole building. (takes two wires from the machine) We need a bit of privacy. (holds the wires together.)
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL CORRIDOR
The guards pass through a metal doorway and are electrocuted.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL CUPBOARD
DOCTOR: Just enough to stun them. Why has she wired up a tower block? What's it all for? (hands DONNA a wire to hold while he uses the sonic screwdriver)
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA is examining the inducer to make sure all is well.
COMPUTER: Inducer online.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL CUPBOARD
DONNA watches as the DOCTOR works.
DONNA: You look older.
DOCTOR: Thanks.
DONNA: Still on your own?
DOCTOR: Yep. Well, no. I had this friend. Martha, she was called. Martha Jones. She was brilliant. And I destroyed half her life. But she's fine, she's good. (pause) She's gone.
DONNA: What about Rose?
DOCTOR: Still lost. I thought you were gonna travel the world?
DONNA: Easier said than done. It's like I had that one day with you, and I was gonna change, I was gonna do so much. Then I woke up the next morning...same old life. It was like you were never there. And I tried. I did try. I went to Egypt. I was gonna go barefoot and everything. And then it's all bus trips and guidebooks and "Don't drink the water" and two weeks later you're back home. It's nothing like being with you. I must've been mad, turning down that offer.
DOCTOR: What offer?
DONNA: To come with you.
DOCTOR: (stops and looks at her, puzzled) Come with me?
DONNA: Oh, yes, please.
DOCTOR: Right.
COMPUTER: Inducer activated.
DONNA: What's it doing now?
DOCTOR: She's started the program!
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA presses down a lever
COMPUTER: Inducer transmitting.
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: Mark the date, Miss Carter. Happy Birthday. (looks out window onto London) One million birthdays.
INT., BAR
SYLVIA is gathered with her friends, laughing over drinks.
SUZETTE: I swear, that Adipose treatment is fabulous. Just look at my chin. And it's very good for the back. I'm down two sizes.
SYLVIA: It's like a miracle. All that from just one little pill?
SUZETTE: And I've been eating like normal-(acts like she has indigestion)
SYLVIA: Are you all right, love?
SUZETTE: Yeah-(grunts and stomach rumbles) Just-uh-funny sort of feeling like-(body jerks)
A man in the bar not far from the ladies seems to be suffering the same thing. His girlfriend is concerned.
WOMAN: What's happening?
MAN: I'm not sure. (holds stomach) It just seems to be-
SUZETTE: Better...pop to the loo. (gets up from the table and turns. There is a bulge at her upper back)
SYLVIA: Oh, my God! Suzette!
SUZETTE: What? (looks over shoulder)
INT. ROGER DAVEY'S LIVING ROOM
ROGER is sitting reading when he sees a bulge moving on his side. He jumps up and stares at the moving skin.
INT., BAR
SUZETTE: (panicked) What is it? Get it off me!
SYLVIA goes to look. She pulls down the collar of Suzette's top to revel an Adipose. SYLVIA looks around to see other patrons in the bar suffering the same way.
INT. ROGER DAVEY'S LIVING ROOM
ROGER is lying on the floor and witnesses an Adipose break free. It waves at him before running out the cat flap.
INT., BAR
A puzzled SYLVIA follows the Adipose as it makes its way out of the bar.
EXT. NIGHT, STREET
SYLVIA sees another man twitching as well as a number of Adipose in the street. A cab skids to a halt, squishing some of the Adipose. The Adipose walk en masse down the street as everyone watches, some on mobiles.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: Come to me, children. Come to me.
EXT. NIGHT, STREET
Everyone in the street watches as the Adipose head for Adipose Industries.
POLICEWOMAN: Everyone keep back. Don't touch them. Keep away from the road.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL CUPBOARD
DOCTOR: So far they're just losing weight. But the Matron's gone up to emergency parthenogenesis.
DONNA: And that's when they convert-
DOCTOR: Skeleton, organs, everything. A million people are gonna die!
INT., BAR
SYLVIA has returned to SUZETTE and watches helplessly as she and other patrons of the bar jerk and twitch.
INT. ROGER DAVEY'S LIVING ROOM
ROGER is lying on the floor twitching.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL CUPBOARD
DOCTOR: Gotta cancel the signal. (pulls pendant from pocket and twists it open, exposing wires) This contains the primary signal. If I can switch it off, the fat goes back to being just fat. (attaches the capsule to the inducer)
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: A nice try. Double strength. (pushes lever all the way down)
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL CUPBOARD
COMPUTER: Inducer increasing.
DOCTOR: (backs away) No, no, no-she's doubled it! I need-- Haven't got time. It's too far, I can't override it. They're all gonna die!
INT., BAR
SUZETTE and other patrons of the bar jerk and twitch.
INT. ROGER DAVEY'S LIVING ROOM
ROGER is lying on the floor twitching.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL CUPBOARD
DONNA: (calmly) Is there anything I can do?
DOCTOR: (tries to shut off machine)Sorry, Donna, this is way beyond you. Gotta double the base pulse. I cut-
DONNA: (calmly) Doctor, tell me, what do you need?
DOCTOR: I need a second capsule to boost the override but I've only got the one! I can't save them!
DONNA takes the capsule from her pocket and holds it up by the chain. The DOCTOR turns, sees it, and they both grin and laugh. He takes it and hooks it to the inducer like the first one. The machine goes dead.
INT., BAR
SUZETTE: It's stopped. (pats herself down) They've gone.
MAN: Oh, thank God. (hugs girlfriend)
Another female patron smiles with her friends.
INT. ROGER DAVEY'S LIVING ROOM
ROGER still on the floor sighs in relief.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA tries a number of switches to get the inducer to work again.
PENNY: What's happened?
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: I think...the Doctor happened. But we've still given birth to 10,000 Adipose...(a spaceship roars) and the nursery is coming.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL CUPBOARD
The DOCTOR looks up as the building shakes.
DONNA: What the hell is that?
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, MISS FOSTER'S OFFICE
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: It's my lift...home. (walks out of the office)
PENNY: (struggling) You can't just leave me here!
INT., BAR
SUZETTE: It just stopped.
SYLVIA: (hears spaceship and the building shakes) What on Earth is it now? Oh, my God! (runs outside)
EXT. NIGHT, STREET
A woman screams hysterically as the spaceship passes over the street, bright lights shining down.
EXT. NIGHT, HILLTOP
Sitting by his telescope, WILF has on headphones listening to music and is facing in the wrong direction as the spaceship flies behind him.
EXT. NIGHT, STREET IN FRONT OF ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES
The ship comes to a halt above Adipose Industries. Thousands of Adipose children fill the street.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL CUPBOARD
DONNA: Fine. When you say nursery, you don't mean a crèche in Notting Hill.
DOCTOR: Nursery ship.
The computer comes back to life.
COMPUTER: Incoming signal. (begins transmission in an alien language)
DONNA: Hadn't we better go and stop them?
DOCTOR: (holds up index finger as he listens) Hold on, hold on, hold on. Instructions from the Adiposian First Family.
EXT. NIGHT, STREET IN FRONT OF ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA stands on the steps facing the street, hands up at her sides like Eva Peron.
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: Children...Oh, my children, behold. I am taking you home. (in the street, the Adipose babies cheer) Far across the galaxy, your new mummies and daddies are waiting and you will fly! (blue beams of light shoot down from the ship) Up you go, babies. Up you go. (All the creatures within the circles of light are lifted to the ship) That's it. Fly away home.
INT. ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, SUB-LEVEL CUPBOARD
DOCTOR: She's wired up the tower block to convert it to a levitation post. Oh...oh... We're not the ones in trouble now...she is!
The DOCTOR dashes out of the cupboard and down the corridor, DONNA following.
EXT. NIGHT, STREET IN FRONT OF ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA looks up at the ship.
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: Take me! The children need me!
EXT. NIGHT, ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES, ROOF
The DOCTOR and DONNA arrive on the roof and run to the edge where they can see the Adipose heading up to the ship.
DONNA: What are you going to do, then? Blow 'em up?
DOCTOR: They're just children. They can't help where they came from.
DONNA: That makes a change from last time. That Martha must've done you good.
DOCTOR: She did, yeah. Yeah. She did. (sniffs) She fancied me.
DONNA: Mad Martha, that one. Blind Martha. Charity Martha. (one of the Adipose waves and they wave back) I'm waving at fat.
DOCTOR: Actually, as a diet plan, it sort of works. There she is! (MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA is level with the roof) Matron Cofelia! Listen to me!
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: No, I don't think so, Doctor. And if I never see you again, it'll be too soon.
DOCTOR: (groans) Why does no one ever listen? Look, I'm trying to help! Get across to the roof! Can you shift the levitation beam?
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: What? So you can arrest me?
DOCTOR: Just listen! I saw the Adiposian instructions. They know it's a crime-breeding on Earth. So what's the one thing they want to get rid of? Their accomplice!
MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA: I'm far more than that. I'm nanny to all these children.
DOCTOR: Exactly! Mum and Dad have got the kids now. They don't need the nanny anymore.
The beam holding MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA shuts off and she hangs there a few seconds, a la Wile E. Coyote, before falling to the ground. DONNA buries her head in the DOCTOR'S chest for a few moments. They both watch as the ship flies away.
EXT. NIGHT, STREET IN FRONT OF ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES
The DOCTOR pulls MISS FOSTER/MATRON COFELIA'S sonic pen from his pocket and tosses it into a trash bin. PENNY comes up to them, still tied to the chair.
PENNY: Oi! You two! You're just mad, d'ya hear me? Mad! And I'm going to report you for...madness! (walks away)
DONNA: (sighs) You see? Some people just can't take it.
DOCTOR: Nope.
DONNA: And some people can. So then...TARDIS! Come on! (yanks him by the hand and pulls him away)
EXT. NIGHT, BACK STREET
The DOCTOR and DONNA walk down the alley where they parked. DONNA sees the TARDIS so close to her car.
DONNA: That's my car! That is like destiny! And I've been ready for this! (opens boot and it's filled with bags and suitcases) I packed ages ago, just in case. (starts unloading) 'Cause I thought hot weather, cold weather, no weather-it goes anywhere! (shoves bags in the DOCTOR'S arms) I've gotta be prepared! (places hatbox precariously on top)
DOCTOR: You've got a-a hatbox.
DONNA: Planet of the Hats, I'm ready!
A pile of luggage is on the ground. The DOCTOR stands outside the TARDIS, a large bag under his right arm and a smaller one in his left hand. DONNA stands in the TARDIS entrance.
DONNA: I don't need any injections, do I? You know like when you go to Cambodia-is there any of that? 'Cause my friend Veena went to Bahrain and she-You're not saying much.
DOCTOR: No, it's just-it's a funny old life...in the TARDIS.
DONNA: You don't want me.
DOCTOR: I'm not saying that.
DONNA: But you asked me. (pause) Would you rather be on your own?
DOCTOR: No. Actually, no. But (puts down bags) the last time...with Martha, like I said, it-it got complicated. And it was all my fault. (sighs) I just want a mate.
DONNA: You're not mating with me, sunshine!
DOCTOR: A mate! I want a mate!
DONNA: Well, just as well, because I'm not having any of that nonsense. I mean you're just a long streak of (motions with her hands how skinny he is) nothing. Alien nothing!
DOCTOR: Well, there we are then. Okay.
DONNA: I can come?
DOCTOR: Yeah, course you can. Yeah. (DONNA gasps) I'd love it.
DONNA: That's just-(she rushes towards him as if to hug, he has his arms open, and DONNA stops suddenly) Car keys. (reaches into jacket pocket)
DOCTOR: What?
DONNA: I've still got my mum's car keys. Won't be a minute. (rushes off)
The DOCTOR rubs his chin and slowly begins to pick up DONNA'S bags.
EXT. NIGHT, STREET IN FRONT OF ADIPOSE INDUSTRIES
DONNA rounds the corner of the building to where the police have now blocked the road. She's on her mobile.
DONNA: I know, Mum, I saw it. Little fat people. Listen, I've got to go. I'm gonna stay with Veena for a bit.
SYLVIA: It was in the sky.
DONNA: I know, a spaceship. Look, I've still got the car keys. There's a bit on Brooke Street about 30 feet from the corner. I'll leave them in there.
SYLVIA: What? A bin?
DONNA: Yes, I said, "bin".
SYLVIA: But you can't do that.
DONNA: Oh, stop complaining. The car's just down the road a bit. Gotta go. Really gotta go.
SYLVIA: But, Donna, you can't-
DONNA: Bye. (ends call. Sees someone leaning against the police barrier.) Listen. (runs up to a woman who turns her head to face her) There's this woman who's gonna come along. A tall blonde woman called Sylvia. Tell her that bin there. It'll make sense. That bin there. (runs off)
The woman turns around and it's ROSE! ["Doomsday" music] She walks away and slowly fades.
EXT. NIGHT, BACK STREET
DONNA runs down the street and into the TARDIS.
INT. TARDIS
The DOCTOR is leaning against the console, facing the door, DONNA'S bags at his feet.
DONNA: Off we go then.
DOCTOR: Here it is-the TARDIS. It's bigger on the inside that it is on the outside-
DONNA: Oh, I know all that bit. Although, frankly, you could turn the heat up.
DOCTOR: So! Whole wide universe...where do you want to go?
DONNA: Oh, I know exactly the place.
DOCTOR: Which is?
DONNA: Two and a half miles that way (nods her head to the left)
EXT. NIGHT, HILLTOP
WILF is drinking coffee when he looks up to see the TARDIS spinning by.
WILF: Look, Donna, it's-it's the flying blue box! (looks through telescope to see DONNA at the door of the TARDIS waving to him, the DOCTOR behind her) What? That's Donna. Th-that's Donna! And that's him! That's him! (pulls hat off and shouts) Yay! That's him! (laughs) Go on, girl! Go on, get up there! (dances)
The TARDIS flies off.
