See, not as long a wait!!
Happy New Year!
???
The DOCTOR peers through a clear barrier as he spins around. The spinning stops and we see it was looking through a clothes dryer.
INT. CLARA’S FLAT, KITCHEN
The DOCTOR is alone in CLARA’S kitchen.
DOCTOR:
The Satanic Nebula! Or…(looks into a fish bowl) the lagoon of lost stars... or we could go... to Brighton!
INT. CLARA’S FLAT, HALL/BEDROOM
The DOCTOR stands in the doorway to CLARA’s bedroom.
DOCTOR:
I've got a whole day worked out.
CLARA:
(puts on a jacket) Sorry, but as you can see, I've got plans.
DOCTOR:
Have you?
CLARA:
Look at me.
DOCTOR:
Yeah, OK.
CLARA:
(goes closer) No, no, no. No. (flips hair back) Look at me.
DOCTOR:
Yep, looking.
CLARA:
Seriously?
DOCTOR:
Why is your face all coloured in?
INT. CLASSROOM, DAY
DANNY and CLARA are standing close as he asks her out.
DANNY:
7.15. Meeting me. You are. Date. Second one.
CLARA:
Got the words out. Not in the right order, but, hey...maths teacher!
They lean in to kiss when a student runs in.
BOTH:
Out!
INT. CLARA’S FLAT, HALL/BEDROOM
The DOCTOR continues to watch CLARA get ready.
DOCTOR:
Are you taller?
CLARA:
(kicks a leg out behind her to show her shoes) Heels.
DOCTOR:
What, do you have to reach a high shelf?
CLARA:
Right, got to go. Going to be late. (walks past him out of the room)
DOCTOR:
(wondering out loud) For a shelf?
INT. CLARA’S FLAT, HALL
CLARA heads for the exit.
CLARA:
Bye!
The TARDIS phone begins to ring and she walks back. The DOCTOR is just staring at the TARDIS. He hasn’t moved.
CLARA:
There you go, you've got another playmate.
INT. CLARA’S FLAT, LOUNGE
The TARDIS just fits in the room. The DOCTOR and CLARA stand in the doorway and let it ring.
DOCTOR:
Hardly anyone in the universe has that number.
CLARA:
Well, I'VE got it.
DOCTOR:
Yes, from some woman in a shop. We STILL don't know who that was.
CLARA:
Is that her now?
DOCTOR:
(takes a step into the room) There are very few people that it could be. (heads to the TARDIS and reaches for the phone)
CLARA:
Don't.
DOCTOR:
(stops and looks at her) Why not?
CLARA:
Because, if you answer it, something will happen.
DOCTOR:
What?
CLARA:
A thing.
DOCTOR:
It's just a phone, Clara. Nothing happens when you answer the phone. (answers phone)
INT. ROOM
The DOCTOR screams, suddenly finding himself holding a memory worm. CLARA screams as she realizes she is holding one as well as the DOCTOR drops the worm on the floor. We also see they are sitting at a table.
CLARA:
Doctor?
DOCTOR:
Don't touch it!
CLARA:
(looks around) Where are we? How did we get here?
A MAN and WOMAN sit across from them at the table. A silver briefcase rests in the center of the table.
MAN:
Who are you? Sorry, what's going on? I don't understand.
The WOMAN touches the worm and her face stretches and morphs briefly.
WOMAN:
What is that thing?
DOCTOR:
It's a memory worm.
CLARA:
(to WOMAN) What happened to your face?
DOCTOR:
Deletes your memories.
CLARA:
(to the DOCTOR) Did you see her face?
WOMAN:
How did I get here?
The MAN shrugs. We see the hair on the side of his head is shaved and there seems to be metal implants.
DOCTOR:
The same way we all did, but we've all forgotten.
WOMAN:
And who are you?
At that moment, a speaker plays from the case.
DOCTOR: (over speaker)
I am the Doctor, a Time Lord from Gallifrey. I have agreed to this memory wipe of my own free will.
CLARA: (over speaker)
I am Clara Oswald, human. I have agreed to this memory wipe of my own free will. Do I really have to touch that worm thing?
DOCTOR: (over speaker)
Yes, you do. And change your shoes. You're next, Psi.
MAN: (over speaker)
I am Psi - augmented human. I have agreed to this...memory wipe of my own free will.
PSI pulls a chip from the side of his head. The digital readout displays “Memory Comprimised”. He puts it back.
WOMAN: (over speaker)
I am Saibra - mutant human. I have agreed to this memory wipe of my own free will.
The lock light turns green and the case hisses open.

INT. ROOM
A screen pops up from the case. An elaborate “K” in script appears briefly before showing a man in a hood. His voice is distorted. They all watch, baffled and curious.
MAN: (on screen)
This is a recorded message. I am the Architect. Your last memory is of receiving a contact from an unknown agency - me. Everything since has been erased from your minds. Now, pay close attention to this briefing. (shows a planet) This is the Bank of Karabraxos - the most secure bank in the galaxy. (zooms in to show a building that is part pyramid and part fortress) A fortress for the super-rich. If you can afford your own star system, this is where you keep it. (shows vault and safeguards) No-one sets foot on the planet without protocols. All movement is monitored, all air consumption regulated. DNA is authenticated at every stage. (shows customers accessing vaults) Intruders will be incinerated. Each vault, buried deep in the earth, is accessed by a drop-slot at the planet's surface. It's atomically sealed - an unbreakable lock. The atoms have all been scrambled. Your presence on this planet is unauthorised. A team will have been dispatched to terminate you.
There is a banging on the door.
GUARD:
This is bank security! Open up!
ARCHITECT:
'Your survival depends on following my instructions.'
GUARD:
Open up and you shall be humanely disposed of.
Now they are all standing.
SAIBRA:
There's another exit!
ARCHITECT:
'All the information you need is in this case.'
PSI takes a connect a wire from his head to the slot in the computer. We see the code run in his eyes.
DOCTOR:
What are you doing?
PSI:
Downloading.
DOCTOR:
Ah. Augmented - nice.
ARCHITECT:
'The Bank of Karabraxos is impregnable.'
PSI finishes his download.
GUARD:
Please stand away from the door! We do not wish to hurt you before incineration.
ARCHITECT:
'The Bank of Karabraxos has never been breached. You will rob the Bank of Karabraxos.'
INT. BANK, OFFICE
A WOMAN sits behind a desk in a sterile-looking office. She is wearing a severe dark suit, glasses and her hair is pulled back tightly. She speaks into a hand-held intercom.
WOMAN:
Report.
GUARD: (over intercom)
(out of it) 'Sorry, hello? Who is this?'
WOMAN:
This is Ms Delphox - Head of Bank Security. I sent you to investigate an off-world intruder.
GUARD:
'Did you? I was wondering what we're doing here.'
INT. ROOM
A GUARD is holding one of the memory worms.
GUARD:
We found these amazing worms...
INT. BANK, OFFICE
MS DELPHOX gets up from the desk and strides to a door. She exhales into a sensor. It clicks and allows her entry. She speaks to two helmeted and uniformed guards.
DELPHOX:
Unwelcome guests. We're going to need the Teller.
We hear a low growling as she approaches a foggy window. There is something large on the other side.
DELPHOX:
(taps the window with a fingernail) Are you hungry, boy? (air kisses)
INT. BANK, HALL
The DOCTOR, CLARA, PSI and SAIBRA run through the halls escaping the guards.
DOCTOR:
OK, OK, OK. Stop, stop, stop. (breathes heavily) Far enough.
Everyone stops.
DOCTOR:
(circles PSI) Augmented human. Computer-augmented, yes? Mainframe in your head?
PSI:
I'm a gamer. Sorry, who put YOU in charge?
DOCTOR:
You're a liar. That's a prison code on your neck.
PSI:
I'm a hacker...slash bank robber.
DOCTOR:
Good. This is a good day to be a bank robber. (turns to SAIBRA) Mutant human. What kind of mutant?
SAIBRA:
Like he says, why are YOU in charge now?
DOCTOR:
It's my special power - what's yours?
SAIBRA walks over to CLARA and holds out her hand. CLARA takes it. SAIBRA then changes her appearance so she looks like CLARA. She lets go of CLARA’S hand and changes back.
SAIBRA:
I touch living cells - I can replicate the owner.
CLARA:
Your face, when we first saw you...
SAIBRA:
I touched the worm.
CLARA:
You can replicate their clothes too?
SAIBRA:
I wear a hologram shell.
The DOCTOR holds out a small rectangular device he took from the briefcase.
DOCTOR:
Human cells. DNA from a customer, maybe? A disguise to get us in?
CLARA:
We're actually going to do it? Rob the bank?
DOCTOR:
I don't think we have a choice - we've already agreed to.
SAIBRA touches a finger to the pad in the device.
EXT. BANK, COURTYARD, DAY
An older, distinguished-looking man in a pinstripe suit walks up alongside the DOCTOR who is shading his eyes as he looks at the building. Aware of the man at his side, he turns to him.
DOCTOR:
How long can you maintain the image for?
The man is SAIBRA.
SAIBRA: (in male voice)
For as long as I like.
INT. BANK, MAIN LOBBY, DAY
The sun shines through high windows lighting the immense room. Patrons and employees of the bank go about their business. The DOCTOR and his “crew” enter the lobby. They stride along as if they are meant to be there.
DOCTOR:
Question one - robbing banks is easy if you've got a TARDIS. So why am I not using it?
CLARA:
Question two, where IS the TARDIS?
DOCTOR:
OK, that probably should be question one.
The lights flicker down and barred doors slide out, closing off all exits. A male voice comes over the speakers with an announcement.
COMPUTER:
'Banking floor locking down.'
SAIBRA:
They know we're here.
COMPUTER:
'Banking floor locking down.'
Everyone stops where they are. MS DELPHOX enters and two security men approach a man with a look of panic on his face. We then see something dressed in a red spacesuit. There are shackles on its legs and bands surround its arms. It is vaguely humanoid but its eyes are at the end of appendages on either side of its head. Armed guards follow.
SAIBRA:
What is that?
DOCTOR:
I don't know. Hate not knowing.
MS DELPHOX walks up to the MAN.
DELPHOX:
Excuse me, sir. I regret to say that your guilt has been detected.
MAN:
What? That...that's totally ridiculous.
The creature comes to a halt behind MS DELPHOX.
DELPHOX:
Is it, sir? Well, then, we will certainly double-check. The Teller will now scan your thoughts for any criminal intent. Good luck, sir. (walks away)
The MAN sets down his case nervously as the TELLER approaches.
DOCTOR:
Interesting.
PSI:
What is?
DOCTOR:
The latest thing in sniffer dogs. Telepathic - it hunts guilt.
There is a high pitch whine and the MAN grabs his head and groans in pain.
CLARA:
What about OUR guilt?
DOCTOR:
Currently being drowned out.
The MAN holds his hands to his temples, concentrating on something.
CLARA:
What's he doing?
DOCTOR:
If he has a plan, he's trying NOT to think of it.
PSI:
Ever tried not thinking about something?
CLARA:
No.
SAIBRA:
You may have to.
The TELLER lunges forward with a growl.
DELPHOX:
(walks back) Ah, criminal intent detected. How naughty. What was your plan? Counterfeit currency in your briefcase, perhaps?
MAN:
No, not at all, for God's sake.
DELPHOX:
It doesn't really matter, we'll establish the details later. The Teller is never wrong when it comes to guilt. Your account will now be deleted, and obviously your mind. Suppertime! (leaves)
The guards tighten their hold on the chains as the TELLER steps closer to the MAN. He turns his eye appendages together which seems to emit a concentration of energy aimed at the MAN. The MAN grips his head and cries out in pain. PSI seems to get a little feedback as he winces.
DOCTOR:
Wiping his mind - turning his brain into soup.
DELPHOX:
Your next of kin will be informed, and incarcerated, as further inducement to honest financial transactions.
The MAN screams.
CLARA:
We've got to help him.
DOCTOR:
He's gone already, it's over.
CLARA:
He's in agony, look at him.
There is wetness leaking from his eyes.
DOCTOR:
Those aren't tears, Clara. That's soup.
The TELLER stops and the MAN’S hands drop to his side. His head is now concave.
DELPHOX:
Account closed. Take him away. He's ready for his close-up.
The guards lead the MAN away.
DELPHOX:
Apologies for the disturbance. Everyone have a lovely day.
INT. BANK, VAULT BOOTH, DAY
The four enter a room through large double doors. Opposite the entrance, is a breath-lock by small doors in the wall. SAIBRA walks up to it.
COMPUTER:
'Deposit booth locking. Please exhale. Your valuables will be transported up from the vault.'
SAIBRA breaths into the receptor and the light turns green. She then changes to her normal appearance.
SAIBRA:
If he can break in here and plant this thing, then why does he need our help?
DOCTOR:
Depends what the thing is. (opens the case to reveal a device connected to wires and a timer) OK, well, I'm no expert, but...fuses, timer, I'm going to stick my neck out and say "bomb". (turns to PSI) Bank schematic...now.
PSI takes a device from his jacket and plugs it into the chip in his head. He then brings up the schematics on one of the walls of the room.
INT. BANK, OFFICE
MS DELPHOX gets up from the desk and strides to a door. She exhales into a sensor. It clicks and allows her entry. She speaks to two helmeted and uniformed guards.
INT. BANK, OFFICE
MS DELPHOX sits at her desk reading a file. A security guard stands facing the desk.
DELPHOX:
So, the man we captured on the banking floor wasn't the target.
GUARD:
Four visitors just entered a safety-deposit box.
DELPHOX:
The greatest bank in the galaxy. Our reputation must remain secure. The Director will blame us. We'll be fired... fired with pain.
INT. BANK, VAULT BOOTH, DAY
They look at the schematics projected on the wall.
DOCTOR:
The floor below is all service corridors - the veins and arteries of the bank. (walks to the center of the room)
PSI disconnects and they turn to watch the DOCTOR. The DOCTOR stamps on the floor as the others stare.
DOCTOR:
He wants us to blow through the floor.
SAIBRA:
We'll die if we do that.
DOCTOR:
Well, not necessarily - there must be a plan. (paces)
CLARA:
What if the plan is, we're blowing up the floor for someone else? What if we're not supposed to make it out alive?
DOCTOR:
Oh, don't be so...pessimistic - it'll affect team morale.
SAIBRA:
What, and getting us blown up won't?
DOCTOR:
(examines bomb) Well, only very, very briefly.
PSI:
Er, no, no way! Do you what you like. I'm going to take my chances out there. (walks to the exit)
CLARA:
Psi!
PSI:
No, no, no, this guy - your mate - is a lunatic!
DOCTOR:
What do you want, Psi - more than anything else? Whatever it is, it's in this bank. You agreed to rob the most impregnable bank in history - you must have had a very good reason. We all must have. Picture the thing you want most in the universe - and decide how badly you want it. Well?
PSI:
Still don't understand why you're in charge.
DOCTOR:
Basically, it's the eyebrows.
The DOCTOR activates the bomb and sets it on the floor. The four of them brace against the walls as the beeping becomes rapid. The tone increases and there is a small explosion. They then look at the small localized hole in the floor.
DOCTOR:
Nice. Dimensional shift bomb. Sends the particles to a different plane. Come on, then - Team Not Dead!
INT. BANK, OUTSIDE VAULT BOOTH, DAY
Armed guards pound on the door.
GUARD:
Open up!
INT. BANK, VAULT BOOTH, DAY
Through the hole in the floor, we see the four of them making their way down ladders towards the vault. The DOCTOR uses the device and the floor reappears just as the guards enter.
INT. BANK, SERVICE BASEMENT, DAY
The DOCTOR, CLARA, PSI and SAIBRA walk past water pipes and other conduits.
SAIBRA:
Well, so, what are we supposed to do now? What's the plan?
DOCTOR:
I don't know. The Architect set all this up, it should make sense. My personal plan is that a thing will probably happen quite soon.
SAIBRA:
So that's it. That's your plan?
DOCTOR:
Yep.
SAIBRA:
A thing will happen?
DOCTOR:
A thing...probably.
CLARA spots another briefcase.
CLARA:
Hey, Psi! Doctor!
They stand around the case.
DOCTOR:
There you go! Thing time!
CLARA:
How does he get the cases here?
DOCTOR:
By breaking into the bank in advance of breaking into the bank.
CLARA:
How did he do that? And if he CAN do that, why does he need us?
DOCTOR:
Not our problem.
PSI:
What IS our prob-prob-prob-prob...? (head jerks to side with each stutter)
CLARA:
You OK?
PSI:
Drive glitch, it's fine.
DOCTOR:
Guilt is our problem. Guilt, in this bank, is fatal. The Teller can hear it. Ever since that first case was opened, we've been targets. The more we know about why we're here, the louder our guilt screams. That's why we wiped our memories - for our own safety. (lifts case) Now, once I open this, I can't close it again.
PSI:
Would it be safer if only one of us learned it?
DOCTOR:
I'm waiting for you to volunteer.
PSI:
Er, why me?
DOCTOR:
Because you didn't need that memory worm, did you? You're half-computer, you can perform a manual delete. You CAN clear your thoughts.
PSI:
OK. (opens case) I don't know what it is. You may as well have a look. (turns the case around for the others to see)
The DOCTOR picks up one of the identical devices.
CLARA:
Well, what are they?
DOCTOR:
Not a clue.
SAIBRA:
Hmm, interesting.
DOCTOR:
What is?
SAIBRA:
You're lying.
PSI:
Er, why would he be lyi-lyi-lyi-lying? (bends over) Ugh! Sorry. Stress. Drains the batteries.
DOCTOR:
(walks over to a computer panel on the wall) Interface with this.
SAIBRA:
Do we have time for this?
DOCTOR:
Why not? There's no immediate threat.
An alarm sounds and a computer voice is heard over speakers.
COMPUTER:
'Warning. Intruders detected.'
DOCTOR:
I should stop saying things like that.
COMPUTER:
'Intruders detected.'
DOCTOR:
Clara, stay with Psi. Saibra, let's go and investigate.
The DOCTOR and SAIBRA leave.
COMPUTER:
'Intru...'
PSI plugs into the panel, silencing the computer. He plugs the chip into his head and groans. He takes it out and blows on it before putting it back.
PSI:
Storm dust.
CLARA:
(sits across from him) You can delete your memories?
PSI:
Yeah, it's not as fun as it sounds.
CLARA:
I've got a few I wish I could lose.
PSI:
And I've lost a few I wish I hadn't. No, I was...I was interrogated in prison. And I guess I panicked. I didn't want to be a risk to the people close to me, so...
CLARA:
You deleted your friends?
PSI:
My friends, anyone whoever helped me, my family.
CLARA:
Your family?
PSI:
Of course, my family.
CLARA:
How could you do that?
PSI:
Well, I don't know. (sighs) I suppose I must have loved them.
INT. BANK, SERVICE CORRIDOR, DAY
The DOCTOR kicks out a panel from the duct he and SAIBRA were using and emerge into the corridor.
DOCTOR:
Aren't you going to ask me?
SAIBRA:
Why did you lie? Those things, you know what they are.
The DOCTOR and SAIBRA walk down the hall.
DOCTOR:
Exit strategy, of sorts. How did you know I was lying?
SAIBRA:
I've had a lot of faces, I find them easy to read.
DOCTOR:
Quite a gift.
SAIBRA:
Gift?!
DOCTOR:
Got us in here.
SAIBRA:
Mutant gene. No-one can touch me. If they do, I transform. (stops walking) Touch me, Doctor, and you'll be looking at yourself. I am alone!
DOCTOR:
Why?
SAIBRA:
Could you trust someone who looked back at you out of your own eyes?
The DOCTOR hears a muffled groan and walks around the corner. He and SAIBRA walk down the corridor following the sound. They find a section of wall with three small barred windows. The DOCTOR looks inside. CLARA and PSI run up to them.
CLARA:
(looks into window) Oh, my God. Why is he even still alive?
Inside is the man they saw get his brain turned to soup. His wrists are shackled to chains hanging from the ceiling.
DOCTOR:
I don't know. But someone is watching.
There is a camera on the wall.
PSI:
Doctor. However this goes, whatever happens... don't let me end up like that.
An alarm sounds.
COMPUTER:
'Intruders on the service level. Intruders on the service level.'
They run down the corridor and stop and another duct.
DOCTOR:
Now, this says, "Place to hide."
The DOCTOR uses the sonic on the duct cover and they all crawl through.
INT. BANK, TELLER’S CELL, DAY
The DOCTOR crawls out first and tries to look through the glass and mist to see what’s inside. As the others come out, he sees the TELLER.
SAIBRA:
Where are we?
The DOCTOR puts his face up to the glass and the TELLER hisses. The DOCTOR jerks back.
DOCTOR:
Nobody move. Nobody say a word. It's cocooned. Forced hibernation. Its power is probably dormant.
There is a commotion from outside the room and CLARA startles, ready to run. The TELLER turns in her direction.
DOCTOR:
Clara! It's locked on to you. It may still be asleep, don't wake it.
CLARA:
OK. How do I not do that?
DOCTOR:
Keep your mind blank. Block everything. Once it locks onto your thoughts, it won't let go.
CLARA closes her eyes. We hear the TELLER growl that then turns into a high-pitched whine.
DOCTOR:
It's waking up. Keep blocking your thoughts, Clara. Don't think.
The TELLER roars.
PSI:
This way!
PSI leads them out the duct opposite where they came in. SAIBRA, who had been watching the way they had come in, gets caught by the TELLER’S field. She falls to the floor. The others watch through the grate.
PSI:
Saibra!
CLARA:
She's still in there. How do we get her out?
DOCTOR:
It's scanning her brain.
CLARA:
Then what?!
DOCTOR:
Soup!
CLARA:
Then help her!
SAIBRA winces as the TELLER scans her mind. The DOCTOR opens the grate and slips into the room.
DOCTOR:
Saibra!
SAIBRA:
(strained) What should I do? How can I get away?
DOCTOR:
It's rooting through your brain. It's tasting all the secrets stashed inside. Any moment now, it will finish its sweep and start feasting on what's left.
SAIBRA:
And then I become one of those things we saw, sitting in a cage!
DOCTOR:
Yes.
SAIBRA:
Can you not get me out?
DOCTOR:
I'm sorry. I don't know how, once it's locked onto your thoughts.
SAIBRA:
Exit strategy. That means what I think it means, right?
DOCTOR:
(holds up device from the case) Atomic shredder.
SAIBRA:
Painless?
DOCTOR:
And instant.
The TELLER intensifies the scan.
SAIBRA:
When you meet the Architect, promise me something. Kill him.
DOCTOR:
I hate him, but I can't make that promise.
SAIBRA:
A good man...I left it late to meet one of those. (activates the shredder and is dispersed)
The DOCTOR stares at where SAIBRA had been. In the duct, CLARA closes her eyes. The TELLER roars.
INT. BANK, SERVICE CORRIDOR, DAY
They escape into another corridor. PSI checks ahead in one direction, the DOCTOR checks the other. They have found the vault.
DOCTOR:
(walks towards the vault) Right, vault, that's clear. What's not clear is what we do now.
CLARA:
You OK?
DOCTOR:
No, I'm an amnesiac robbing a bank, why would I be OK?
CLARA:
Because Saibra...
DOCTOR:
What? Saibra is dead, we are alive. Prioritise if you want to stay that way.
PSI:
Oh, is THAT why you call yourself the Doctor - the professional detachment?
The DOCTOR looks at PSI, turns back to CLARA and then walks past PSI to the vault. He walks back to PSI.
DOCTOR:
Listen, when we're done here, by all means, you go and find yourself a shoulder to cry on. You'll probably need that. Till then, what you need is me! (strides to the vault)
CLARA:
Underneath it all, he isn't really like that.
PSI:
It's very obvious that you've been with him for a while.
CLARA:
Why?
PSI:
Because you are really good at the excuses.
The DOCTOR returns with another case.
DOCTOR:
Another gift from the Architect. Shall we unwrap it?
INT. BANK, TELLER’S CELL, DAY
Miss DELPHOX watches as two guards remove the grate from the duct the DOCTOR, CLARA and PSI used to escape.
DELPHOX:
The unbreakable bank. We must locate them. And Director Karabraxos must not know. When people get fired here... it's messy. Release the Teller into the tunnels.
One of the guards taps a code into the keypad lock.
INT. BANK, SERVICE CORRIDOR, DAY
PSI plugs in the chip from the case and winces slightly as it uploads. He then rushes into the security room. The DOCTOR follows him. CLARA looks at a card with “TECH 251 ORG 339 PV” printed on it.
PSI:
Right, the system looks like it's time-delayed. There are 24 lock codes I need to break.
CLARA hears the TELLER and hurries to the DOCTOR.
CLARA:
Doctor...it's coming. We're trapped.
DOCTOR:
Psi, how long?
PSI:
As long as it takes.
DOCTOR:
It's locked on to one of our thought trails. We have to split up, minimise the brain signals.
PSI:
What happened to your professional detachment, Doctor?
PSI holds out his hand. The DOCTOR pulls an atomic shredder from his pocket and gives it to PSI.
CLARA:
No, no!
PSI:
In case it finds me. It's my choice.
CLARA:
You don't use that, OK? Promise me.
PSI:
Time to run.
CLARA runs after the DOCTOR as PSI sits in front of the computer to unlock the vault.
INT. BANK, SERVICE CORRIDOR, DAY
The DOCTOR and CLARA run along a blue-lit corridor. They come to a junction.
DOCTOR:
Separate!
They take opposite corridors. CLARA takes a red corridor. We see the TELLER, also in a red corridor.
INT. BANK, VAULT COMPUTER, DAY
PSI is working on the lock.
COMPUTER:
'Vault box opening. Vault box opening. 24, 23, 22, 21, 20, 19, 18, 17...'
The lights denoting the countdown turn from red to green in a clockwise fashion. PSI gets out and runs down the hall.
INT. BANK, RED SERVICE CORRIDOR, DAY
CLARA runs down the hall and stops, panting. She hides as she hears the TELLER getting closer. She concentrates on making her mind go blank as the TELLER pauses.
DOCTOR: (v.o.)
Keep your mind clear, Clara. Keep your mind blank.
The TELLER comes closer and CLARA makes a run for it.
CLARA:
Aggh!
INT. BANK, BLUE SERVICE CORRIDOR, DAY
The DOCTOR hears CLARA’S cry.
DOCTOR:
Clara!
INT. BANK, SERVICE CORRIDOR, DAY
PSI stops running when he hears CLARA. After a moment of indecision, he goes to a panel in the wall and plugs in.
INT. BANK, RED SERVICE CORRIDOR, DAY
CLARA is caught in the TELLER’S “field”. She strains against it as her mind is scanned.
PSI: (over speaker)
Come on! Come and find me.
CONTINUED, INTERCUT WITH –
- CUT TO:
INT. BANK, SERVICE CORRIDOR, DAY
PSI:
Every thief and villain in one big cocktail. (we see mug shots flashing on the wall) I am so guilty!
CLARA is released as the TELLER leaves to go after PSI.
PSI:
Every famous burglar in history is hiding in this bank right now in one body! Go and feast!
CLARA listens to every word. PSI leaves the wall and heads down the corridor.
PSI:
Clara! For what it's worth - and it might not be worth much - when your whole life flashes in front of you, you see people you love... and people missing you... Well, I see no-one.
PSI faces the TELLER and activates the shredder. He disappears with a scream just as the TELLER begins his scan. CLARA runs back to the vault.
INT. BANK, VAULT COMPUTER ROOM, DAY
The rest of the lights turn green. The last light turns red again.
COMPUTER:
'Three, two, one... Failed. Vault unlocking. Failed.'
INT. BANK, VAULT CORRIDOR, DAY
CLARA runs past the DOCTOR to the vault and pounds on the locked door.
CLARA:
(grunts) It's not opening! (faces the DOCTOR) Psi... he died for nothing.
The DOCTOR goes to the computer.
INT. BANK, VAULT COMPUTER ROOM, DAY
The DOCTOR uses the sonic on the lock “clock”.
DOCTOR:
Multiple locks. Last one still in place. (takes the front panel off and uses the sonic on the workings) Atomic seal. Unbreakable. Even for me. The Architect would know that. He wouldn't bring us all this way for nothing.
CLARA:
And get two people killed.
DOCTOR:
Exactly. There must be some logic.
CLARA:
Some logic?
DOCTOR:
Come on, Architect! What else have you got?
Thunder rumbles.
INT. BANK, OFFICE
MS DELPHOX is at her desk and picks up her intercom.
DELPHOX:
Report, please. What was the disturbance?
INT. BANK, MAIN LOBBY, DAY
GUARD:
Solar storm. Getting worse. Interfering with our systems.
SPACE
Flares move out from the nearby sun in waves of energy.
INT. BANK, MAIN LOBBY, DAY
The light from the solar storm passes over the lobby as thunder rumbles.
INT. BANK, VAULT COMPUTER ROOM, DAY
DOCTOR:
A storm... The storm's tripping the system. (goes into the corridor)
INT. BANK, VAULT CORRIDOR, DAY
DOCTOR:
That's what he's got - a storm!
CLARA:
How would he know WHEN a storm would hit?
DOCTOR:
(laughs) Of course! Stupid, stupid Doctor. Of course, of course!
CLARA:
Of course, what?
DOCTOR:
Whoever planned all this, they're in the future. This isn't just a bank heist... it's a time-travel heist. We've been sent back in time to the exact moment of the storm, to be in exactly the right place when it hits, because that's the only time the bank is vulnerable!
The bolts in the vault door release.
COMPUTER:
'Vault unlocked.'
The door begins to open.
DOCTOR:
The bank is now open!
COMPUTER:
'Vault unlocked.'
The DOCTOR and CLARA peer into the vault.
INT. BANK, VAULT, DAY
The DOCTOR and CLARA enter the massive vault.
DOCTOR:
It explains why we're not here in the TARDIS.
CLARA:
Sorry, what?
DOCTOR:
The solar disruption would have made navigation impossible. The one time the bank is vulnerable is the one time we can't just land.
CLARA:
Doctor...the code! The code that was in the last case. (pulls the card from her pocket) Look. Tech.
DOCTOR:
(reads the card) Technology. 251. Find it.
They split up to find the right drawer in the vault. CLARA finds the section first.
CLARA:
Tech.
The DOCTOR comes over and together they find and open the drawer. Inside is a small box which the DOCTOR opens. He takes out a cylindrical device.
DOCTOR:
It's a neophyte circuit. I've only ever seen one once before. It can reboot any system. Replace any lost data.
CLARA:
Psi... that's what he came for - his reward.
DOCTOR:
So, what did Saibra come for? (pockets the circuit)
CLARA holds up the card and they head for the next section. They find ORG 339 and open it. Inside is a box containing a vial.
DOCTOR:
Gene suppressant.
CLARA:
She wanted to be normal.
DOCTOR:
Everyone has a weakness. So, the big question is this - what did we come for?
CLARA:
(reads card) PV...
DOCTOR:
Private vault. Karabraxos's own fortune?
The DOCTOR turns to leave and finds himself face-to-face with the TELLER. The TELLER growls.
INT. BANK, OFFICE
MS DELPHOX is sitting at her desk lecturing.
DELPHOX:
Intruders are most welcome. They remind us that the bank is impregnable. (stands and we see she is talking to the DOCTOR and CLARA) It's good for morale to have a few of you scattered about the place, preferably on view. (we see a wall of monitors showing victims of the TELLER) Are you ready for YOUR close-up? If you're thinking of ways to escape, the Teller will know before you've even made a move. You'll never be bothered by all that thinking again.
DOCTOR:
Useful species.
DELPHOX:
Last of its kind, and we've signed an exclusive deal.
DOCTOR:
Must be noisy inside its head. Painful to listen to so much chatter, so many secrets... Must drive it wild. How can you force it to obey?
DELPHOX:
Oh, everything has a price tag, I think you'll find.
Thunder crashes.
DELPHOX:
The storm's getting worse. Customers are leaving. Director Karabraxos will soon be... concerned. Our jobs will be on the line.
DOCTOR:
You're scared.
DELPHOX:
Oh, I'm terrified. I have the disadvantage of knowing Karabraxos personally.
DOCTOR:
If you don't like your boss, why stay?
DELPHOX:
My face fits. Now...if you'll excuse me, I must take the Teller to its hibernation. (to guards) You two, dispose of our guests. (takes the TELLER away)
As the guards move to escort them out, the DOCTOR sees the breath “lock” at the door.
INT. BANK, HALL
MISS DELPHOX walks down the hall.
INT. BANK, OFFICE
The guards back the DOCTOR and CLARA against the wall.
DOCTOR:
Don't do this. I'm having a very bad day, and I do not want to be pushed around.
GUARD:
You're wrong.
DOCTOR:
Wrong?
GUARD:
It's not that bad a day. And you're being very slow.
DOCTOR:
Why are you undoing my handcuffs?
The GUARD morphs into a familiar face.
DOCTOR:
Saibra?
GUARD 2:
It LOOKED like death. (removes helmet to reveal PSI) It was actually a teleporter.
CLARA:
Oh, my God! (hugs PSI)
PSI:
Good, eh? You think we're dead, so the Teller thinks we're dead, and we play the creature at his own mind games.
DOCTOR:
No, no, wait, wait, wait, wait! What? Sorry, sorry, what? You, you, you're...you're alive?
SAIBRA:
Yeah, we're alive. Look at us, we're all alive.
DOCTOR:
No, no, no, no. Not dead. Alive.
PSI:
There's an escape ship in orbit. Takes you right there. (hands the DOCTOR the device) Oh, and there's this big blue box - is that yours?
CLARA pumps her fist at the news.
DOCTOR:
Well, this is good... I suppose... You'll be able to resume the mission. (holds the bottle out to SAIBRA) Gene suppressant - antidote for your condition. (gives PSI the circuit) Memory giver. All your yesterdays. There you go. Job done, paid in full. Clever old Architect.
SAIBRA:
Very clever.
DOCTOR:
I still hate him.
SAIBRA:
Me too.
PSI:
How were you paid?
DOCTOR:
I don't know. There's something in the private vault.
INT. BANK, SERVICE BASEMENT, DAY
The DOCTOR, CLARA, PSI and SAIBRA reach the bottom of a ladder.
DOCTOR:
What's that?
PSI:
Supply line. It's the only oxygen down to the private vault. There's another one for water for basic life support.
CLARA:
What, for a private vault?
DOCTOR:
Someone likes to hang out with their wealth.
PSI leads the way to the private vault.
INT. BANK, PRIVATE VAULT
The vault is filled with artefacts and looks more like a museum or private office than a vault. Classical music plays. The four enter through a duct. The DOCTOR looks around, seemingly impressed by the collection. A large wingback chair is behind a desk.
DOCTOR:
Director Karabraxos? Excuse us, but we've come to rob you. So, if you want to put your hands above your head, or...
The chair spins around and we see a woman who looks like MISS DELPHOX, hands up.
WOMAN:
Or? You didn't bring any weapons. That's a bit of an oversight. (into intercom) Security, Karabraxos here.
DOCTOR:
You're Karabraxos?
KARABRAXOS:
One moment.
DELPHOX: (on screen)
Director Karabraxos, is there a problem?
KARABRAXOS:
Intruders in the private vault. Send me the Teller. I want to find out how they got in, and then I want to wipe their memories.
DOCTOR:
She's a clone.
KARABRAXOS:
It's the only way to control my own security. I have a clone in every facility. (to DELPHOX) Get on it right away.
DELPHOX:
Yes, of course.
KARABRAXOS:
And then hand in your credentials. You're fired, with immediate effect.
DELPHOX:
But, please, I've been in your service...
KARABRAXOS:
Ever since the last one let me down and I was forced to kill it. I can't quite believe that you're putting me through this again. (ends call) My clone. And yet she doesn't even protest. Pale imitation, really. I should sue!
CLARA:
You're killing her? You just said...
KARABRAXOS:
Fired? I put all of the used clones into the incinerator. Can't have too many of moi scattered around.
PSI:
Sorry, you don't get on with your own clone?
DOCTOR:
She hates her own clones, she burns her own clones. Frankly, you're a career break for the right therapist. (comes to a realization) Shut up. Everybody, just...just shut up!
KARABRAXOS:
And what is this display now, as amusing as you are?
DOCTOR:
Shut up! Just shut up, shut up, shut up, shutetty up up up! (snaps fingers) (to SAIBRA) What...what did you say? What did...you say? What did you say...about your own eyes? De-shut up, say it again.
SAIBRA:
How can you trust someone if they look back at you out of your own eyes?
DOCTOR:
(walks around the room) I know one thing about the Architect. What is it that I know? I know one thing, something I've known from the very start.
CLARA:
What?
DOCTOR:
I hate him. He's overbearing, he's manipulative, he likes to think that he's very clever. I HATE him. Clara, don't you see? (bangs gong) I hate the Architect!
KARABRAXOS:
(stands) What in the name of sanity is going in this room now?
DOCTOR:
We're getting sanity judgment from the self-burner. Do you mind if I borrow a little bit of paper? (takes paper from the desk and leans on a display to write)
KARABRAXOS:
And what are you doing now?
DOCTOR:
I'm giving you... (turns around) my telephone number. (blows on the paper)
KARABRAXOS:
Why?
DOCTOR:
Well, I thought you might like to call me someday.
The DOCTOR sets the folded paper on the desk. The outside reads “I am a time traveler”.
DOCTOR:
Sorry, I thought we were getting along famously - am I, like, misreading the signals or something?
Thunder rumbles and the building shakes.
DOCTOR:
Oh, that was a big one, wasn't it? I think that your bank is about to close for good, Karabraxos. If I was you, I'd get going. Don't mind us, we'll just stay here and burn.
An alarm blares.
EXT. BANK, DAY
An intense wave of solar energy passes over the bank and surrounding area.
INT. BANK, MAIN LOBBY, DAY
Clients begin to panic and rush across the floor.
INT. BANK, PRIVATE VAULT
KARABRAXOS is packing valuables into a case.
DOCTOR:
Hard to know what to take. The greatest treasures of the universe in just one suitcase.
Thunder crashes.
CLARA:
Doctor, what's the plan? IS there a plan?
SAIBRA:
We can use the shredders, get back to the ship.
DOCTOR:
They're not shredders, they're teleports, and that's not the most interesting thing about them.
SAIBRA:
So what is?
DOCTOR:
There were six of them. Hey. (walks over to KARABRAXOS) Give me a call me some time.
KARABRAXOS is preparing to leave by a private lift.
COMPUTER:
'Doors opening.'
KARABRAXOS:
You'll be dead.
DOCTOR:
Yeah, you'll be old - we'll get on famously. You'll be old and full of regret for the things that you can't change.
KARABRAXOS steps through the doors.
COMPUTER:
'Doors closing.'
The DOCTOR mimes using a phone as the doors close.
PSI:
Doctor, what the hell is going on?
CLARA:
Are you remembering?
DOCTOR:
No, not a thing. But I'm understanding.
CLARA:
What is it? What are you understanding?
DOCTOR:
I'm not sure yet. I need my memory back. And I think there is only one way to do that...
CLARA:
Which would be?
DOCTOR:
Soup.
CLARA:
Soup?
The lift doors open behind the DOCTOR to reveal the TELLER. The TELLER growls.
DOCTOR:
(faces the TELLER) Hello, big man. Peckish?
The TELLER puts his two stalks together and begins to scan the DOCTOR who falls to the floor.
CLARA:
Doctor!
DOCTOR:
(strained) No...no, let it take me. Let it read me. It's the only way!
CLARA:
It will kill you!
DOCTOR:
What have I told you about pessimism? Right, that's it... There are so many memories in here. Feast on them. Tuck in. Big scarf, bow tie, bit embarrassing. What do you think of the new look? I was hoping for minimalism, but I think I came up with magician! In the last few days, there's been a block. Can you see the block? Tell me why I'm here! Show me why I'm here! Show me!
INT. CLARA’S FLAT, LOUNGE
The DOCTOR is standing by the TARDIS.
DOCTOR:
It's just a phone, Clara. Nothing happens when you answer the phone. (answers phone)
CONTINUED, INTERCUT WITH –
- CUT TO:
INT. BEDROOM
An elderly WOMAN talks into the phone.
WOMAN:
Doctor?
DOCTOR:
Hello?
WOMAN:
You gave me this number. My name is Madame Karabraxos. I was once...the wealthiest person in the Universe. I need your assistance. I'm dying. With many, many regrets...but one...perhaps... you may be able to help me with.
DOCTOR:
It's a little detour. It's a job, I've got to do it for someone. Come on.
INT. TARDIS, CONSOLE ROOM
DOCTOR:
We need to rob a bank.
CLARA:
What?
DOCTOR:
Clara, I need worms.
The DOCTOR dematerializes the TARDIS. On the monitor, he searches for people to helps with his plan. Among the faces are scrolls through various faces, including Psi, Saibra, and the man she imitates. The DOCTOR shakes hands with the man and then transfers the skin cells to the device in the first case. He then records his message as the Architect.
INT. BANK, ROOM
We see SAIBRA touch the worm, PSI delete his memory and then CLARA touche the worm.
INT. TARDIS, CONSOLE ROOM
The DOCTOR uses the TARDIS to distort his voice in the recording.
DOCTOR:
Architect.
TARDIS:
(distorted) Architect.
DOCTOR:
Architect.
TARDIS:
(distorted) Architect.
DOCTOR:
Architect.
TARDIS:
(distorted) Architect.
DOCTOR:
Architect.
INT. BANK
The DOCTOR plants the cases and worms.
INT. TARDIS
DOCTOR: (v.o.)
You will rob the Bank of Karabraxos.
The DOCTOR removes his hood after recording the video of the Architect.
INT. BANK, PRIVATE VAULT
The TELLER stops and the DOCTOR stands. He tries to explain to the TELLER. He backs away as the TELLER advances.
DOCTOR:
Did you see... why we came? Why we're here? We had to delete our own memories, otherwise you'd have known, and then she'd have known. Because you're mentally linked. But she's gone now. They've ALL gone. They have no power over you now. You can do exactly what you want to do now. Exactly what you've always wanted to do.
Using telekinesis, the TELLER unlocks an inner safe.
PSI:
It knows the combination!
DOCTOR:
Of course it does, it was linked to Karabraxos.
CLARA:
What exactly are we doing here? That thing killed people.
DOCTOR:
So might you do, to protect everything you loved.
The door to the safe opens to reveal another creature like the TELLER, dressed in the same suit. It is chained to the wall. It lets out a wail.
DOCTOR:
There she is. Not the last of its species. The last TWO.
The DOCTOR and PSI goes into the cell. The DOCTOR lays a comforting hand on the mate’s head as PSI tries to free the chains.
DOCTOR:
It's OK, it's OK. It's all right. (re-enters the vault)
SAIBRA:
Exit strategy. We've got six shredders.
DOCTOR:
Exactly! This wasn't a bank heist - it never was. It was rescue mission, for a whole species. Flesh and blood - the last currency.
Thunder rumbles.
DOCTOR:
Time to go home. What do you think of that, big man?
The TELLER roars.
EXT. FIELDS, DAY
The DOCTOR and CLARA stand outside the TARDIS.
DOCTOR:
So much mental traffic in the universe. Solitude is the only peace.
The two creatures walk together across the wide open space.
SPACE
The TARDIS spins its way through the stars.
INT. TARDIS, CONSOLE ROOM
They are having Chinese takeaway and the DOCTOR is in the middle of a story.
DOCTOR:
Gioffre Borgia - mucho scary hombre - says to me, "What do you think of our Leaning Tower of Pisa?" I say, (leans to the side) "It looks OK to me!"
CLARA, PSI and SAIBRA laugh.
SPACE
The TARDIS continues on its way.
INT. TARDIS, CONSOLE ROOM
PSI:
(shakes the DOCTOR’S hand) If you ever need help with another bank heist... (releases)
CLARA:
(hugs PSI) Yeah, it's not really his area.
PSI clicks his tongue and points his finger at SAIBRA as he heads for the door. She returns the gesture.
SPACE
The TARDIS goes on to another stop.
INT. TARDIS, CONSOLE ROOM
SAIBRA:
(hugs the DOCTOR) See? I don't have your face now!
DOCTOR:
Yeah. I kind of miss that.
SAIBRA:
Oh, shut up! (pushes him before leaving)
SPACE
The TARDIS goes to the last stop after a very convoluted detour.
INT. TARDIS, CONSOLE ROOM
DOCTOR:
7.12, local time, as promised. Go and enjoy yourself. Don't do anything I wouldn't do.
CLARA:
It's a date! I've just realised. I'm going out for another meal now!
DOCTOR:
Don't worry. Calories consumed on the TARDIS have no lasting effect.
CLARA:
What? Are you kidding?!
DOCTOR:
Of course I'm kidding. It's a time machine, not a miracle-worker! Bye!
CLARA:
(heads for the door) See you. Don't rob any banks.
DOCTOR:
"Don't rob any banks" what?
CLARA:
(pauses) Without me.
DOCTOR:
Course not, boss.
CLARA leaves.
DOCTOR:
Robbing a bank! Robbing a whole bank! Beat that for a date! (walks over to the console and sets the TARDIS in motion)
