DONNA
He's gonna choke! Doctor!

The DOCTOR is underneath the rear of the car using the sonic screwdriver.

DOCTOR
It won't open!

SYLVIA rushes to the car and smashes the windscreen with an axe.

SYLVIA
Well don't just stand there! Get him out!

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, DOCKING BAY

SOLDIER
All soldiers to a door! Make the factory secure and take positions on the ground floor!

MACE
Wicowsky, take the soldiers into the factory! Make the area secure. Seal off doors and windows.

Soldiers are pushing all vehicles outside the bay. Others are putting on gas masks.

SOLDIER
We've tried everything! It just won't stop!

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

MACE
(enters) What have we got?

PRICE
ATMOS is running wild, sir. It can't be stopped, it's everywhere. The whole planet.

A monitor shows red where the gas is spreading. The MARTHA CLONE enters the base and uses Martha's security clearance to hack into the NATO defence system.

EXT. DAY, STREET

DONNA and SYLVIA are supporting WILF as they head back to the house. The DOCTOR follows.

WILF
Thanks.

DONNA
I can't believe you've got an axe.

SYLVIA
Burglars!

DOCTOR
Get inside the house! Just try to close off the doors and windows.

ROSS pulls up in a black cab.

ROSS
Doctor, it's all I could find that hasn't got ATMOS.

DOCTOR
(getting into cab) Donna, you coming?

DONNA
Yeah.

SYLVIA
Donna! Don't go! Look what happens every time that Doctor appears, Stay with us, please!

WILF
You go, my darling.

SYLVIA
Dad!

WILF
Don't you listen to her! You go with the Doctor! That's my girl! (DONNA gets into the cab) Bye!

ROSS drives off.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

The MARTHA CLONE has finished downloading security protocols and places the chip in her handheld. She leaves the base.

EXT. DAY, UNIT FIELD BASE

The MARTHA CLONE connects to the UNIT mainframe.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL enters the bridge.

SKORR
Success. The operative has the necessary information.

STAAL
Good work for a female. Now she must be protected.

SKORR
I will prepare an attack squad. (leaves)

LUKE
This is it, isn't it? Oh man, this is war!

STAAL
And how does it feel, boy?

LUKE
Magnificent.

STAAL nods his approval.

TV BROADCASTS

NEWS 24 BROADCASTER
The government has declared a state of emergency. People are being told to stay away from all cars with ATMOS devices attached.

AMNN NEWSCASTER
The gas appears to be toxic. We are warning anyone and everyone to stay away from the cars. Repeat: stay away from your cars.

EXT. DAY, ATMOS FACTORY

The DOCTOR, DONNA and ROSS pull up in the cab. The DOCTOR and DONNA get out.

DOCTOR
Ross, look after yourself. Get inside the building.

ROSS
Will do. (into radio) Greyhound 40 to Trap 1. I've just returned the Doctor to the base, safe and sound.

EXT. DAY, UNIT FIELD BASE

The MARTHA CLONE listens in on ROSS as his message comes over the radio.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

MACE
Trap 1 received. Over.

The MARTHA CLONE enters.

MARTHA CLONE
Message from the Doctor. He says Code Red Sontaran.

MACE
All troops, Code Red Sontaran. Code Red Sontaran.

EXT. DAY, ATMOS FACTORY

DONNA
The air is disgusting.

DOCTOR
It's not so bad for me. Go on, get inside the TARDIS. Oh, I've never given you a key, (reaches into coat pocket) Keep that. Go on, it's yours. Quite a big moment, really.

DONNA
(coughs) Yeah. Maybe we can get sentimental after the world's finished choking to death. (takes key)

DOCTOR
Good idea. (runs towards factory)

DONNA
Where are you going?

DOCTOR
To stop a war. (ducks under barrier)

EXT. DAY, OUTSIDE TARDIS

DONNA runs up to the TARDIS coughing and opens the door.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA coughs as she walks away from the door.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

DOCTOR
(enters) Right then, here I am Good. Whatever you do, Col Mace, do not engage the Sontarans in battle. There's nothing they like better than a war. Leave this to me.

MACE
And what are you going to do?

DOCTOR
I've got the TARDIS. I'm gonna get aboard their ship.

The MARTHA CLONE hears this conversation and presses a button on her handheld.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, DOCKING BAY

HARRIS and GREY become alert.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

The DOCTOR leans down next to the MARTHA CLONE.

DOCTOR
Come on.

The MARTHA CLONE follows. As the DOCTOR leaves, he pats MACE on the shoulder.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, DOCKING BAY

HARRIS and GREY nod to each other before leaving the docking bay.

EXT. DAY, OUTSIDE TARDIS

HARRIS and GREY arrive outside the TARDIS and place two small devices on the front doors.

HARRIS
(into radio) Ready for transport.

HARRIS and GREY walk away and the TARDIS disappears.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA is walking around the console when the ship shudders and rumbles.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

The TARDIS sits in a corner.

STAAL
The spoils of war. The Doctor's infamous vessel in Sontaran hands.

LUKE
It's time I made a move, sir. I have soldiers of my own. I'll tell them of the honour and the glory, sir. I'll tell them that planetfall is coming! (teleports)

SKORR
He is behaving exactly as predicted, sir.

DONNA peeks out the door but closes it upon seeing the Sontarans.

STAAL
None of the humans can guess our true purpose.

EXT. DAY

The DOCTOR and the MARTHA CLONE arrive where the TARDIS had been.

MARTHA CLONE
But-where's the TARDIS?

DOCTOR
Taste that, in the air. Bleah, bleah. That sort of metal tang? Teleport exchange. It's the Sontarans. They've taken it. I'm stuck...on Earth, like...like an ordinary person. Like a human. How rubbish is that? Sorry, no offence, but come on!

MARTHA CLONE
So what do we do?

DOCTOR
Well...I mean, it's shielded, they could never detect it. (looks at her)

MARTHA CLONE
What?

DOCTOR
I was just wondering, have you phoned your family and Tom?

MARTHA CLONE
No, what for?

DOCTOR
The gas. Tell 'em to stay inside.

MARTHA CLONE
Of course...I will, yeah. What about Donna? I mean, where's she?

DOCTOR
Oh, she's gone home. She's not like you. She's not a soldier. Right! So, avanti!

EXT. DAY, RATTIGAN ACADEMY

The students look out towards a smoke-clouded London. The main door behind them opens and closes.

LUKE
Leave it! (he's standing on the steps) Turn away. Civilization is falling.

MALE STUDENT
But it's all over the news, sir. It's everywhere. Paris and New York...

LUKE
(walks down steps) It's time I told you...all of you. (holds out arms) It's time I revealed what our work has been for.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

The DOCTOR enters and tosses his coat over a bank of computers.

DOCTOR
Change of plans!

MACE
Good to have you fighting alongside us, Doctor.

DOCTOR
I'm not-fighting, as in not-hyphen-fighting, got it? Now, does anyone know what this gas is yet?

MARTHA CLONE
We're working on it. (gets one of the techs to give up his seat)

PRICE
It's harmful but not lethal until it reaches 80% density. We're having the first reports of deaths from the centre of Tokyo City-

DOCTOR
And who are you?

PRICE
Captain Marion Price, sir. (stands and salutes)

DOCTOR
Oh, put your hand down. Don't salute.

MACE
Jodrell Bank's traced a signal, Doctor, coming from 5000 miles above the Earth. We're guessing that's what triggered the cars.

The DOCTOR looks at the monitor showing the ship on RADAR.

DOCTOR
The Sontaran ship.

MACE
NATO's gone to Defcon 1. We're preparing a strike.

DOCTOR
You can't do that. Nuclear missiles won't even scratch the surface. Let me talk to the Sontarans, (fiddles with controls)

MACE
You're not authorized to speak on behalf of Earth.

DOCTOR
I've got that authority. I earned it a long time ago. (inserts the sonic screwdriver into a plug on the communications panel) Calling the Sontaran Command ship...

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

A hologram of the Doctor and Mace appears.

DOCTOR
(hologram) ...under Jurisdiction Two of the Intergalactic Rules of Engagement.

INT. TARDIS

The communication comes over the TARDIS monitor. Donna turns at the DOCTOR'S voice.

DOCTOR
(on monitor) This is the Doctor.

For a split second before Donna gets there, ROSE'S face appears on the monitor silently calling for the DOCTOR. By the time DONNA is there to see, only the DOCTOR and MACE are on the screen.

DONNA
Doctor, I'm here! Can you hear me?

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL
Doctor, breathing your last?

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

STAAL appears on the monitor.

MACE
My God, they're like trolls.

DOCTOR
(to MACE) Loving the diplomacy, thanks. So, tell me, Gen Staal...since when did you lot become cowards? (reclines in a chair)

STAAL
(on monitor) How dare you?!

MACE
That's diplomacy.

STAAL
Doctor, you impugn my honour!

DOCTOR
I'm really glad you didn't say "belittle" 'cause then I'd have a field day. But poison gas? That's the weapon of a coward, and you know it.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

DOCTOR
(hologram) Staal, you could blast this planet out of the sky...

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

DOCTOR
...and yet you're sitting up above watching it die.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

DOCTOR
(hologram) Where's the fight in that?

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

DOCTOR
Where's the honour? Or...

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

DOCTOR
(hologram) ...are you lot planning something else? This isn't normal Sontaran warfare-what are you lot up to?

STAAL
A general would be unwise to reveal...

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

STAAL
(monitor)...his strategy to the opposing forces.

DOCTOR
Ah, the war's not going so well then. Losing, are you?

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL
Such a suggestion...

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

STAAL
(monitor)...is impossible!

MACE
What war?

DOCTOR
The war between the Sontarans and the Rutans.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

DOCTOR
(hologram) It's been raging far out in the stars...

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

DOCTOR
...for 5000 years. 5000 years of bloodshed. And for what?

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL
For victory! Sontar-ha! Sontar-ha! Sontar-ha! (chanting continues)

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

DOCTOR
(takes out sonic screwdriver) Give me a break. (aims it at the monitor and changes it to a children's programme)

CHILDREN'S PROGRAMME
Boys and girls-

MACE
Doctor, I would seriously recommend that this dialogue is handled by official Earth representation.

DOCTOR
(switches back) Finished?

STAAL
(monitor) You will not be so quick to ridicule when you see our prize. Behold! (motions to the TARDIS behind him) We are the first Sontarans in history...

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL
...to capture a TARDIS.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

DOCTOR
Well...as prizes go, that's...noble.

INT. TARDIS

DOCTOR
(monitor) As they say in Latin "Donna nobis pacem".

DONNA
That's me. I'm here!

DOCTOR
(monitor) Did you never wonder about its design? It's a phone box. It contains a phone. A telephonic device for communication. Sort of symbolic. Like if only we could communicate, you and I...

STAAL
(monitor) All you have communicated is your distress, Doctor.

DONNA
Oh my God! (grabs the mobile)

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

DOCTOR
Big mistake, though, showing it to me.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA
But who do I phone?

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

DOCTOR
(twirls sonic screwdriver) 'Cause I've got a remote control.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL
Cease transmission!

INT. TARDIS

DONNA
Doctor, what number are you on? (transmission cuts out) You haven't even got a number!

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL
Remove the box from the war room! Beyond the transmission field!

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

MACE
Oh, well-that achieved nothing.

DOCTOR
(stands and pockets sonic screwdriver) You'd be surprised.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA stumbles.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

The Sontarans move the TARDIS.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA
(frustrated) But what can I do?

INT. RATTIGAN ACADEMY LAB

LUKE
All this stuff we've been building...All this invention-where it's been heading? Gravity densifiers! Hydroponics! Atmospheric conversion! Eco-shells! More than enough to build a brand-new world.

MALE STUDENT
Luke, we haven't got time for this. I gotta find my parents.

LUKE
Oh, but this isn't just theory. I'm talking planetfall for all of us. A brand-new start for a brand-new human race. Look... (turns on hologram showing a solar system) A new world, far out beyond Alpha Geminorium-just waiting for us. It's official designation is Castor 36. I think of it as, uh...Earth.2. I did wonder about "Rattigan's World" but, uh...we can take a vote on that.

MALE STUDENT
What the hell are you on about?

LUKE
This is where we're going. I have partners waiting to take us there.

FEMALE STUDENT
He's lost it. I haven't got time for this. (walks through hologram)

LUKE
He's lost it. I haven't finished! Where are you going?

FEMALE STUDENT
To find my brother.

LUKE
I didn't say you could leave.

FEMALE STUDENT
I told him to put ATMOS in his car. I've got to go and help him!

LUKE
(pulls out gun) Stay where you are!

FEMALE STUDENT
What do you think you're doing?

MALE STUDENT
Luke...put that down.

LUKE
I did this for you. Don't you see? We spent all of our lives excluded-the clever ones. They laughed at us and pulled us down, those ordinary people, those...cattle. This is our chance to leave them behind.

MALE STUDENT
You mean you want them dead?

LUKE
And I choose you to survive! With planetfall, we can start again. We can build and breed, we can prosper, we can do anything!

FEMALE STUDENT
(disgusted) We're going to breed?

LUKE
I've designed a mating programme. (the girl laughs) I planned the whole thing!

FEMALE STUDENT
Well, then shoot me.

LUKE
(aims gun) Stay where you are. (the girl walks away) Stay where you are, I said. (they all start leaving) Stay where you are! That's an order!

MALE STUDENT
"Castor 36"? You're just sick, (leaves)

LUKE
I guess that just proves it...I'm cleverer than you-I'm cleverer than everyone! Do you hear me?! I'm clever! (stamps foot)

TV BROADCASTS

NEWS 24 BROADCASTER
The United Nations has issued a directive worldwide telling urban populations to stay indoors. (gas-shrouded New York City) Those in rural areas (Hagia Sophia) are being ordered to stay away from all major cities. (Sydney Opera House) There are reports of every country in Europe of thousands of people walking across country to escape. And on the eastern seaboard of America, it's said to be reminiscent of Dunkirk with boats taking refugees out into the Atlantic.

AMNN NEWSCASTER
With the freeways blocked by ATMOS cars, populations of major cities are now walking open country to escape the fumes. It's being likened to a Biblical plague. Some are calling this the End of Days.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA dials the phone.

INT. NOBLE HOME

WILF is blocking the doors.

DONNA
(over phone) Mum, are you all right?

SYLVIA
Donna! Where are you, sweetheart?

WILF
Is that her?

SYLVIA
(to WILF) Just finish the job! (to DONNA) Your granddad's sealing us in. He's sealing the windows. Our own house, and we're sealed in. All those things they said about pollution and ozone...

INT. TARDIS

SYLVIA
(over phone) ...and carbon-they're finally happening, aren't they?

DONNA
There's people working on it, Mum. They're gonna fix it, I promise.

SYLVIA
(over phone) Oh, like you'd know-you're so clever.

DONNA
Oh, don't start.

INT. NOBLE HOME

DONNA
(over phone) Please don't.

SYLVIA
I'm sorry. I wish you were here.

WILF
Come on, Sylvia, that doesn't help. (takes phone)

INT. TARDIS

WILF
(over phone) Donna, where are ya?

DONNA
(looks around) It's sort of hard to say. You all right?

WILF
(over phone) Yeah.

INT. NOBLE HOME

WILF
Fighting fit, yeah. Is he with you, the Doctor?

SYLVIA
Oh, the Doctor.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA
No. I'm all on my own.

INT. NOBLE HOME

WILF
Look, you promised he was gonna look after you.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA
He will, Gramps. There's something he needs me to do. I just don't know what.

INT. NOBLE HOME

WILF
The whole place is covered, all of London. They're saying-the whole world. It's the scale of it, Donna.

INT. TARDIS

WILF
(over phone) I mean, how can one man stop all that?

DONNA
Trust me-he can do it.

INT. NOBLE HOME

WILF
Well, if he doesn't, you tell him he'll have to answer to me.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA
I will...just as soon as I see him. I'll tell him.

INT. NOBLE HOME

WILF chokes back a sob and hangs up.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA closes the phone and lets the tears flow.

INT. NOBLE HOME

SYLVIA looks out the window at the gas-filled street.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

The MARTHA CLONE is reading the analysis of the gas, a sample of which is contained in front of her. The DOCTOR walks up and takes the clipboard from her.

MARTHA CLONE
Carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides but 10% unidentified. Some sort of artificial heavy element we can't trace. Ever seen anything like it?

DOCTOR
Must be something the Sontarans invented. This isn't just poison-they need this gas for something else. But what could that be?

PRICE
Launch grid online and active.

MACE
Positions, ladies and gentlemen. Defcon 1 initiatives in progress.

DOCTOR
What? I told you not to launch!

MACE
The gas is at 60% density. At 80%, people start dying. We've got no choice.

PRICE
Launching in 60...59, 58...

The DOCTOR rubs his head in frustration.

PRICE
57, 56... Worldwide nuclear grid now coordinating...54, 53...

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL
Ha! The planet is going nuclear. I admire them. The bravery of idiots is bravery nonetheless.

SOLDIER
The operative is in place.

STAAL
Cmdr Skorr, is the attack squad ready?

INT. SONTARAN SHIP

SKORR is waiting in another part of the ship with the squad.

SKORR
Ready and wager for battle, sir. We've been watching long enough. It'll be good to taste blood.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

DOCTOR
You're making a mistake, Colonel! For once I hope the Sontarans are ahead of you.

PRICE
North America online. United Kingdom online. (the monitor shows the silos) France online. India online. Pakistan online. China online. North Korea online. All systems locked and coordinated. Launching in 10,9,8,7,6,5...

MACE
God save us.

PRICE
4,3,2,1,0.

The MARTHA CLONE stops the launch, overriding it with her handheld. The screen goes dead.

MACE
What is it? What happened? Did we launch?

The DOCTOR looks over at the MARTHA CLONE.

MACE
Well did we?

PRICE
Negative, sir. The launch codes have been wiped, sir. It must be the Sontarans.

The DOCTOR goes to stand beside the MARTHA CLONE.

MACE
Can we override it?

PRICE
I'm trying it now, sir.

DOCTOR
Missiles wouldn't even dent that ship, so why are the Sontarans so keen to stop you? (looks at MARTHA CLONE) Any ideas?

MARTHA CLONE
How should I know?

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL
Protect the operative.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CORRIDOR

The Sontarans have arrived inside the factory led by SKORR and march through the halls. ROSS is with other soldiers.

ROSS
Stinkin' out there. (hears footsteps) Shh, keep it down, lads. (the Sontarans march around the corner) Enemy within! At arms! (into radio) Greyhound 40 declaring absolute emergency! Sontarans within factory grounds, east corridor, grid 6!

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

MACE
Absolute emergency. Declaring Code Red. All troops, Code Red!

DOCTOR
Get them out of there.

MACE
All troops open fire!

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CORRIDOR

ROSS
The guns aren't working. Inform all troops, standard weapons do not work.

The Sontarans fire, killing the other soldiers with ROSS.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

The DOCTOR and MACE hear their dying screams.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CORRIDOR

ROSS
Tell the Doctor it's that cordalaine signal.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

ROSS
(over radio) He's the only one that can stop them

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CORRIDOR

SKORR fires, killing ROSS.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

All they hear is static. The DOCTOR is stunned.

MACE
Greyhound 40, report. Over.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CORRIDOR

ROSS lies dead and MACE'S voice comes over the radio.

MACE
Greyhound 40, report.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

MACE
Greyhound 40, report. (there is only static)

DOCTOR
He wasn't Greyhound 40. His name was Ross. Now listen to me, and get them out of there!

MACE
Trap 1 to all stations. Retreat. Order imperative. Immediate retreat!

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, FACTORY FLOOR

UNIT soldiers retreat through the factory while the Sontarans follow, shooting. HARRIS and GREY stand while the Sontarans walk by.

HARRIS and GREY
Reporting for duty, sir!

A Sontaran soldier walks past before turning and shooting them.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CORRIDOR

SKORR marches through with his soldiers.

SKORR
This is too easy. They're running like slime bait from a speel fox.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, DOCKING BAY

UNIT soldiers are trying to escape only to be cut down by the Sontarans.

SKORR
This isn't war, this is sport!

The docking bay doors close.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

MACE
They've taken the factory.

DOCTOR
Why? They don't need it. Why attack now? What are they up to? Times like this, I could do with the Brigadier. (looks to MACE) No offence.

MACE
None taken. Sir Alistair's a fine man if not the best. Unfortunately, he's stranded in Peru.

PRICE
Launch grid back online.

The monitor comes back to life. The MARTHA CLONE presses "NO" and it crashes again.

PRICE
They're inside the system, sir. It's coming from within UNIT itself.

MACE
Trace it. Find out where it's coming from and quickly. Gas levels?

PRICE
66% in major population areas and rising.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

SOLDIER
Commander Skorr reports victory with many glorious deaths.

LUKE teleports to the ship.

LUKE
I'm sorry to report, sir... I failed. They wouldn't come. The students, they...didn't have the imagination to believe.

STAAL
A pity. We've lost our target practice.

LUKE
What do you mean?

STAAL
Upon arrival on board this ship, your students would have been shot down. Perhaps they were more clever than you thought.

LUKE
You promised.

STAAL
There was no planetfall. Castor 36, indeed! We only needed you for installation of the ATMOS system!

LUKE
No, but-I'm on your side! I did everything you wanted! (backs towards teleport) And it's not ATMOS "system"-that's a tautology! It's just ATMOS!

STAAL
Execute him! (LUKE teleports away) A coward's retreat. Now close all teleport links to Earth. Isolate them as they perish!

INT. RATTIGAN ACADEMY, LUKE'S QUARTERS

LUKE is curled up in a foetal position crying as he realizes he's been used.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

MACE is sitting at his desk and the DOCTOR leans over as they both read over files.

MACE
Why are they defending the factory only after we're inside?

DOCTOR
Because they wanted UNIT here. You gave them something they needed. Something now hidden inside the factory. Something precious.

MACE
Then we've got to recover it. This cordalaine signal thing-how does it work?

DOCTOR
The bullets-it causes expansion in the copper shells.

MACE
Understood. I'm on it. (heads for the door)

DOCTOR
(from office door) For the billionth time, you can't fight Sontarans!

MACE ignores him and continues walking. The DOCTOR goes to one of the techs.

DOCTOR
(whispers) Have you got a phone? (looks around) I need your mobile, quickly, hurry up! (takes phone)

The MARTHA CLONE turns and watches the DOCTOR go back to MACE'S office.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

The DOCTOR makes a call.

INT. TARDIS

The mobile in DONNA'S hand rings.

DONNA
What's happened? Where are you?

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
Still on Earth. But don't worry, I've got my secret weapon.

DONNA
(on phone) What's that?

DOCTOR
You.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA
Oh. Somehow that's not making me happy. Can't you just zap us down to Earth with that remote thing?

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
Yeah. I haven't got a remote, though I really should. But I need you on that ship. That's why I made them move the TARDIS. I'm sorry, but you've gotta go outside.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA
But there are "Sontiruns" out there.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
Sontarans. But they'll be on battle stations right now. They don't exactly walk about having coffee.

INT. TARDIS

DOCTOR
(on phone) I can talk you through it.

DONNA
What if they find me?

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
I know. I know. I wouldn't ask, but there's nothing else I can do. The whole planet is choking, Donna.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA slowly walks around the console towards the door.

DONNA
What do you need me to do?

DOCTOR
(on phone) The Sontarans are inside the factory, which means they've got a teleport link with the ship, but they'll have deadlocked it. I need you to reopen the link.

DONNA
I can't even mend a fuse.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
Donna, stop talking about yourself like that. You can do this.

INT. TARDIS

DOCTOR
(on phone) I promise.

DONNA walks to the door and opens it. She sees a Sontaran standing just outside with its back to her. She closes the door.

DONNA
There's a "Sontirun"-Sontaran.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
Did he see you?

INT. TARDIS

DONNA
No, he's got his back to me.

DOCTOR
(on phone) Right. On the back of his neck on his collar...

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
...there's a sort of plug, like a hole-the probic vent.

INT. TARDIS

DOCTOR
(on phone) One blow to the probic vent knocks them out.

DONNA
But he's gonna kill me.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
I'm sorry. I swear, I'm so sorry, but you've got to try.

INT. TARDIS

DONNA walks up to the console and picks up the rubber mallet. She then walks out the TARDIS door.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, OUTSIDE THE TARDIS

DONNA walks up quietly behind the Sontaran and swings the mallet at the vent. The SONTARAN falls to the floor.

DONNA
(triumphant into phone) Back of the neck!

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
(mouths) Oh! (normal) Now then you've gotta find the external junction feed to the teleport.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, CORRIDOR

DONNA walks along a corridor.

DONNA
Well, what's it look like?

DOCTOR
(on phone) Um, circular panel on the wall...

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
..big symbol on the front like a, like a letter T...

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, CORRIDOR

DOCTOR
(on phone) ...with a horizontal line through it. Or, or two Fs back-to-back.

DONNA
Oh, there's a door.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
Should be a switch on the side.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, CORRIDOR

DONNA
Yeah, there is, but it's Sontaran-shaped. You need three fingers.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DOCTOR
You've got three fingers.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, CORRIDOR

DONNA
Oh, yeah. (puts hand on the panel and it beeps. The door slides open)

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

DONNA
(on phone) I'm through.

DOCTOR
Oh, you are brilliant, you are!

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, CORRIDOR

The door slides shut.

DONNA
Shut up. Right. T with a line through it.

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE, MACE'S OFFICE

The DOCTOR sees MACE re-enter the base.

DOCTOR
Gotta go. Keep the line open. (slips the phone into a pocket)

INT. UNIT FIELD BASE

MACE
Ready to counterattack.

The DOCTOR leaves MACE'S office.

DOCTOR
I said you don't stand a chance!

MACE
Positions! That means everyone! (throws the DOCTOR a gas mask)

The DOCTOR grabs his coat on the way out.

MARTHA CLONE
You're not going without me.

DOCTOR
Wouldn't dream of it.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, CORRIDOR

DONNA is walking down a corridor when a door in front of her slides open revealing Sontarans. She presses herself into a corner and watches as they march past.

EXT. DAY, UNIT FIELD BASE

Everyone is wearing gas masks and MACE is explaining some new rifles.

MACE
Latest firing stock. What do you think, Doctor?

DOCTOR
(childlike) Are you my mummy?

MACE
If you could concentrate. Bullets with a rad-steel coating. No copper surface. Should overcome the cordalaine signal.

DOCTOR
But the Sontarans have got lasers. You can't even see in this fog, the night vision doesn't work!

MACE
Thank you, Doctor. Thank you for your lack of faith. But this time I'm not listening. (takes off mask and puts on cap) Attention all troops! The Sontarans might think us primitive, as does every passing species with an axe to grind. They make a mockery of our weapons, our soldiers, our ideas-but no more. From this point on, it stops. From this point on, the people of Earth fight back! And we show them-we show the warriors of Sontar what the human race can do! (into radio) Trap 1 to Hawk Major-go, go, go!

There is a whooshing sound from above and everyone looks up. Something large is descending through the smoke.

MACE
It's working. The area's clearing! Engines to maximum!

DOCTOR
It's the Valiant!

The aircraft carrier Valiant appears above them, its powerful engines dispersing the smoke.

MACE
UNIT Carrier Ship Valiant reporting for duty, Doctor. With engines strong enough to clear away the fog.

The MARTHA CLONE takes off her mask. The area around the ATMOS factory is cleared of the gas.

DOCTOR
(takes off mask) Whoa! (laughs) That's brilliant!

MACE
Getting a taste for it, Doctor?

DOCTOR
No. Not at all. Not me.

MACE
(into radio) Valiant, fire at will.

Five beams of light merge into one under the Valiant, which then fires at the ATMOS factory. It scores a direct hit and Sontarans marching through the halls fall to the floor. UNIT then attacks via the docking bay and gain a foothold. The DOCTOR runs into the building with MACE.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CORRIDOR

MACE
East and north secure. Doctor? (continues on with soldiers)

DOCTOR
(takes out mobile) Donna, hold on. I'm coming. (puts phone back and takes out sonic screwdriver)

The MARTHA CLONE arrives.

MARTHA CLONE
Shouldn't we follow the colonel?

DOCTOR
Nah, you and me, Martha Jones. Just like old times. Alien technology...this way.

The MARTHA CLONE stops the launch again and follows.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CORRIDOR

SKORR is enjoying the battle.

SKORR
The honour of battle. The glory!

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, STAIRWAY AND CORRIDOR

The DOCTOR and the MARTHA CLONE head down a stairway and find themselves in a dark corridor that lights as soon as they enter it.

DOCTOR
No Sontarans down here. They can't resist a battle. Here we go.

As they walk along the corridor, the sonic screwdriver begins to beep quicker. They stop at the door at the end of the corridor. The DOCTOR opens it with the sonic screwdriver. He goes in, followed by the MARTHA CLONE.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CLONING ROOM

The DOCTOR sees MARTHA lying unconscious and runs to her.

DOCTOR
Oh, Martha, I'm so sorry. (checks her pulse) Still alive.

The MARTHA CLONE walks up behind the DOCTOR and aims a gun at him.

DOCTOR
Am I supposed to be impressed?

MARTHA CLONE
Wish you carried a gun now?

DOCTOR
Not at all.

MARTHA CLONE
I've been stopping the nuclear launch all this time.

DOCTOR
(faces her) Doing exactly what I wanted. I needed to stop the missiles just as much as the Sontarans. (walks around her) I'm not having Earth start an interstellar war. You're a triple agent.

MARTHA CLONE
When did you know?

DOCTOR
About you? Oh, right from the start. Reduced iris contraction, slight thinning of the hair follicles on the left temple, and, frankly, you smell. You might as well have worn a t-shirt saying "clone". Although, maybe not in front of Captain Jack. You remember him, don't you? 'Cause you've got all her memories. That's why the Sontarans had to protect her, to keep you inside of UNIT. Martha Jones is keeping you alive.

The DOCTOR removes the band from around MARTHA'S head. MARTHA gasps and the clone falls to the floor in pain. The DOCTOR kicks the gun away before going to MARTHA and unfastening the restraints.

DOCTOR
It's all right, it's all right. I'm here, I'm here. (holds her around her shoulders) I've got you.

MARTHA
(grips his arm) There was this ting, Doctor, this alien, with this head...

The mobile rings.

DOCTOR
Blimey, I'm busy. (opens phone) Got it?

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, CORRIDOR

DONNA
Yes. Now hurry up.

DOCTOR
(on phone) Take off the covering, all the blue switches inside...

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CLONING ROOM

DOCTOR
...flip them up, like a fuse box. That should get the teleport working.

MARTHA
(looks at clone) Oh my God...that's me!

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CORRIDOR

SKORR is walking down a hallway and MACE comes up behind him.

MACE
You will face me, sir!

SKORR turns with a growl. MACE fires and SKORR falls to the floor, dying but happy to be doing so in battle.

SKORR
(softly) Wonderful

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CLONING ROOM

The DOCTOR is working on the teleport pod while MARTHA-wearing his coat-is talking with her clone.

CLONE
Don't touch me!

MARTHA
It's not my fault. The Sontarans created you, but...you had all my memories.

CLONE
You've got a brother, sister, mother and father.

MARTHA
If you don't help me, they're gonna die.

CLONE
You love them.

MARTHA
(nods) Yes! Remember that?

DOCTOR
(from teleport) The gas! Tell us about the gas!

CLONE
He's the enemy!

The DOCTOR comes closer to listen.

MARTHA
Then tell me. It's not just poison. What's it for? Martha, please!

CLONE
Caesofine concentrate. It's one part Bosteen, two parts Probic 5.

DOCTOR
(realizing) Clone feed-it's clone feed!

MARTHA
What's clone feed?

DOCTOR
Like amniotic fluid for Sontarans. That's why they're not invading! They're converting the atmosphere! Changing the planet into a clone world. Earth becomes a very big hatchery. 'Cause the Sontarans are clones, that's how they reproduce. Give 'em a planet this big, they'll create billions of new soldiers. (runs back to teleport) The gas isn't poison, it's food!

CLONE
My heart...it's getting slower.

MARTHA
There's nothing I can do.

CLONE
In your mind, you've got so many plans. There's so much that you want to do.

MARTHA
And I will. Never do tomorrow what you can do today, my mum says, 'cause-

CLONE
'Cause you never know how long you've got. Martha Jones...all that life. (dies)

MARTHA takes the engagement ring from the CLONE'S finger and slips it on.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, CORRIDOR

DONNA flips all the switches.

DONNA
(into phone) Doctor!

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CLONING ROOM

The DOCTOR grabs the phone

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, CORRIDOR

DONNA
Blue switches done. (two Sontaran soldiers turn the corner) But they've found me.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CLONING ROOM

The DOCTOR steps out of the teleport and aims the sonic screwdriver at the controls.

DOCTOR
Now!

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, CORRIDOR

DONNA disappears from the ship just as the Sontarans fire at her.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CLONING ROOM

DONNA appears in the teleport pod a little shaken.

DONNA
(gasps) Have I ever told you how much I hate you?! (hugs him)

DOCTOR
Hold on, hold on. Get off me. Get off me! Gotta bring the TARDIS down! (uses sonic screwdriver on panel)

EXT. DAY

The TARDIS returns to its former location.

INT. ATMOS FACTORY, CLONING ROOM

DOCTOR
Right! Now, Martha, you coming?

MARTHA
What about this nuclear launch thing?

DOCTOR
Just keep pressing N. We want to keep those missiles on the ground.

DONNA sees the clone.

DONNA
There's...two of them.

DOCTOR
Yeah. Long story. Here we go. The old team back together. Well, the new team.

DONNA
We're not going back on that ship!

DOCTOR
No, no, no. We needed to get the teleport working so that we could get to... (they teleport)

INT. RATTIGAN ACADEMY, LUKE'S QUARTERS

They appear in the teleport pod.

DOCTOR
...Here. The Rattigan Academy. Owned by-

LUKE is holding a gun on them.

LUKE
Don't tell anyone what I did! It wasn't my fault! The Sontarans lied to me!

The DOCTOR grabs the gun from LUKE'S hands as he walks past.

DOCTOR
If I see one more gun... (tosses it aside)

DONNA and MARTHA walk past LUKE.

DONNA
You know, that coat sort of works.

MARTHA
I feel like a kid in my dad's clothes.

DONNA
Oh well, if you're calling him dad. You're definitely getting over him.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

SOLDIER
A human female on board ship could only be the Doctor's work and all the teleport systems have been deadlocked open.

STAAL
No matter. Increase the ATMOS devices to maximum. Choke them! Behold...the clone world is born! (looks out at grey-covered Earth)

EXT. DAY, STREET

The smoke outside increases to zero visibility.

INT. NOBLE HOME

SYLVIA and WILF cough as they rest on the floor. SYLVIA is in tears. WILF holds her.

WILF
Ah, my little girl. Come on, we'll be all right. (SYLVIA cries) It'll be all right. Donna said so. She promised. Come on, darling. It's all right.

INT. RATTIGAN ACADEMY LAB

The Doctor is gathering different pieces of equipment and putting them together as he talks.

DOCTOR
That's why the Sontarans had to stop the missiles. They were holding back! 'Cause caesofine gas is volatile-that's why they had to use you to stop the nuclear attack. Ground-to-air engagement can spark off the whole thing.

MARTHA
What, like set fire to the atmosphere?

DOCTOR
Yeah. They need all the gas intact to breed their clone army. And all the time we had Luke here and his dream factory. Planning a little trip, were we?

LUKE
They promised me a new world.

DOCTOR
And you were building equipment ready to terraform El Mundo Luko so that humans could live there and breathe air with...this! An atmospheric converter. (carries it outside)

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL
Prepare to launch clone pods. We will breed across the surface of the Earth...for the glory of Sontar!

EXT. DAY, RATTIGAN ACADEMY

The DOCTOR runs outside and places the converter on the ground. DONNA looks out and sees the city covered in the gas.

DONNA
It's London. You can't even see it. My family's in there.

DOCTOR
If I can get this on the right setting...

MARTHA
Doctor, hold on. You said the atmosphere would ignite.

DOCTOR
Yeah, I did, didn't I?

The DOCTOR presses a button launching a "fireball" into the sky. There is an explosion and a fire cloud appears and expands.

DOCTOR
(fingers crossed) Please, please, please, please, please, please.

INT. NOBLE HOME

WILF and SYLVIA look out the window and watch the fire spread across the sky.

EXT. DAY, ATMOS FACTORY

MACE, PRICE and UNIT soldiers watch the fire in the sky.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

An alarm blares.

SOLDIER
Gen Staal, sir.

STAAL
What's happening?! (watches as the fire spreads across Earth)

EXT. DAY, NEW YORK CITY

The fire passes over the famed skyline.

EXT. DAY, RATTIGAN ACADEMY

The DOCTOR, MARTHA, DONNA and LUKE watch as the fire dissipates and the sky is blue again.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL sees the Earth return to normal.

EXT. NOBLE HOME

WILF and SYLVIA step outside and hear birds. They laugh with relief and share the joy with neighbours.

EXT. DAY, ATMOS FACTORY

The UNIT soldiers cheer and PRICE impulsively kisses MACE.

EXT. DAY, RATTIGAN ACADEMY

LUKE
He's a genius!

DONNA laughs with relief.

MARTHA
Just brilliant.

DOCTOR
Now we're in trouble. (picks up converter and runs back inside)

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL
It seems we must revert to basic Sontaran Stratagem One. We will ravage this planet! Prepare weapons! Wipe them out! Every last stinking human beast!

INT. RATTIGAN ACADEMY LAB

The DOCTOR stands inside the teleport pod with the converter.

DOCTOR
Right, so...Donna, thank you. For everything. Martha, you too. Oh...so many times. Luke, do something clever with your life.

DONNA
You're saying goodbye.

DOCTOR
Sontarans are never defeated. They'll be getting ready for war. And, well, I've recalibrated this for Sontaran air so...

MARTHA
You're gonna ignite them.

DONNA
You'll kill yourself.

MARTHA
Just send that thing up on its own. I dunno, put it on a delay.

DOCTOR
I can't.

DONNA
Why not?

DOCTOR
I've gotta give them a choice. (activates teleport)

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

STAAL hears the teleport and looks.

STAAL
Oh, excellent!

The DOCTOR sets down the converter and holds the controls.

DOCTOR
Gen Staal, you know what this is., (STAAL nods) But there's one more option. You can go. Just leave. Sontaran High Command need never know what happened here.

STAAL
Your stratagem would be wise if Sontarans feared death. But we do not. At arms!

DOCTOR
I'll do it, Staal. If it saves the Earth, I'll do it.

STAAL
A warrior doesn't talk, he acts!

DOCTOR
I am giving you the chance to leave.

STAAL
And miss the glory of this moment?

PA
All weapons targeting Earth, sir. Firing in 20...

DOCTOR
I'm warning you!

STAAL
And I salute you! Take aim! (the Sontaran soldiers aim their weapons at the DOCTOR)

DOCTOR
Shoot me, I'm still gonna press this. You'll die, Staal.

STAAL
Knowing that you die too!

PA
Firing in 15...

STAAL
For the glory of Sontar!

ALL
(chanting) Sontar ha! Sontar ha! Sontar ha!

The weapon doors open.

INT. RATTIGAN ACADEMY LAB

LUKE is rewiring the teleport.

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

The chanting continues.

DOCTOR
I'll do it!

STAAL
Then do it!

INT. RATTIGAN ACADEMY LAB

The teleport beeps. DONNA and MARTHA look at LUKE.

MARTHA
What are you doing?

LUKE
Something clever. (teleports)

INT. SONTARAN SHIP, WAR ROOM

The Sontarans are chanting and the DOCTOR is holding the controls when Luke appears, trading places with him.

PA
8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3...

The chanting stops when the Sontarans see what has happened.

LUKE
Sontar ha! (presses button)

PA
...1

The Sontaran ship explodes.

INT. RATTIGAN ACADEMY LAB

The DOCTOR appears in the teleport pod and falls to the floor breathing heavily. He crawls to the edge and sits. MARTHA sits beside him, holding onto his arm and smiling. DONNA comes up and smacks his arm before kneeling and gripping it.

EXT. DAY, STREET

SYLVIA walks down the street with her shopping in hand. She passes a neighbour.

SYLVIA
'Morning.

WOMAN
'Morning.

SYLVIA
Walked all the way. Won't catch me driving.

The woman removes the ATMOS decal from her car.

INT. NOBLE HOME

SYLVIA
(unpacks groceries) The streets are half empty. People still aren't driving.

DONNA and WILF are sitting at the table.

SYLVIA
There's kids on bikes all over the place. It's wonderful. Unpack that lot. I'm gonna see if Suzette's all right. (leaves)

WILF
I won't tell her. Best not. Just keep it as our little secret, eh?

DONNA
Yeah.

WILF
Now, you go with him...that wonderful Doctor. You go and see the stars. And then bring a bit of 'em back for your old Gramps.

DONNA nods. She gets up, hugs him and kisses the top of his head.

DONNA
Love you. (she leaves, wiping away tears)

INT. TARDIS

DONNA enters. MARTHA and the DOCTOR are at the console.

MARTHA
How were they?

DONNA
Oh...same old stuff. (sniffs) They're fine. So, you gonna come with us? We're not exactly short on space.

MARTHA
Oh, I have missed all this, but, you know...I'm good here-back at home. And I'm better for having been away. Besides, (holds up left hand) someone needs me. Never mind the universe, I've got a great big world of my own now (heads for door)

The TARDIS door slams shut and the ship begins to dematerialise.

DOCTOR
What? What? What?

DONNA and MARTHA grab the console.

MARTHA
Doctor, don't you dare!

DOCTOR
No, no! I didn't touch anything! We're in flight! It's not me!

DONNA
Where are we going?

DOCTOR
I don't know! It's out of control!

The DOCTOR'S hand bubbles madly in its container.

MARTHA
Doctor, just listen to me. You take me home. Take me home right now!
