INT. TARDIS
MARTHA and DONNA hold on to the console while the DOCTOR tries to figure out why the TARDIS is out of control.
DONNA
What the hell is it doing?
DOCTOR
Controls aren't working. (gets thrown off balance and sees his hand bubbling in the container) I don't know where we're going but my old hand's very excited about it.
DONNA
I thought that was just some freaky alien thing. You telling me it's yours?
DOCTOR
Well...
MARTHA
It got cut off. He grew a new one.
DONNA
You are completely impossible!
DOCTOR
Not impossible...just a bit unlikely.
The console sparks and they are all thrown back as the TARDIS stops. The DOCTOR races for the door.
INT. TUNNEL
The DOCTOR steps outside into an underground tunnel cluttered with boxes, crates, wire-anything to create a barrier. DONNA and MARTHA follow.
DOCTOR
Why would the TARDIS bring us here?
MARTHA
Oh, I love this bit.
DONNA
I thought you wanted to go home.
MARTHA
I know, but all the same... It's that feeling you get.
DONNA
Like you swallowed a hamster.
Three men in fatigues with guns come at them. The leader, CLINE is the first to speak.
CLINE
Stay where you are! Drop your weapons!
The Doctor, DONNA and MARTHA raise their hands.
DOCTOR
We're not armed. Look, no weapons. Never any weapons. We're safe.
SOLDIER
Look at their hands. They're clean.
CLINE
Process them. Him first.
The two soldiers grab the DOCTOR by the arms.
DOCTOR
Oi, oi! What's wrong with clean hands?
The soldiers push him towards a large piece of machinery.
MARTHA
What's going on? Leave him alone!
They shove the DOCTOR'S arm into an opening and it locks in place.
DOCTOR
Aah! Something tells me this isn't about to check my blood pressure. Aahh! (jerks)
DONNA
What are you doing to him?
CLINE
Everyone gets processed.
DOCTOR
It's taking a tissue sample. Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! And extrapolating it. Some kind of accelerator?
The machine releases his hand and his steps back. DONNA and MARTHA rush over.
MARTHA
Are you all right? (examines the cut on his hand)
The accelerator is attached to a larger part. The doors slide open.
DOCTOR
That's just...
A young woman steps out and looks around. The DOCTOR, DONNA and MARTHA just stare. CLINE hands her a rifle.
CLINE
Arm yourself.
MARTHA
Where did she come from?
DOCTOR
From me. (watches as the girl checks the rifle)
DONNA
From you? How? Who is she?
DOCTOR
Well...she's-well...she's my daughter.
GIRL
(looks at the DOCTOR) Hello, Dad.

GIRL
Instant mental download of all strategy and military protocols, sir. Generation 5000 soldier, primed and in peak physical health. Oh, and I'm ready. (aims rifle over barrier)
DONNA
Did you say..."daughter"?
DOCTOR
Mm. Technically.
MARTHA
Technically, how?
DOCTOR
Progenation. Reproduction from a single organism. Means one parent is biological mother and father. You take a sample of diploid cells, split them into haploids then recombine them in a different arrangement and grow-very quickly, apparently.
GIRL
Something's coming.
Large shadows running forward appear on the tunnel walls.
CLINE
It's the Hath!
GIRL
Get down!
The DOCTOR, DONNA and MARTHA duck for cover as the firing starts. The Hath are humanoid creatures with fish-like heads. They wear breathing apparatus containing water over their faces.
CLINE
We have to blow the tunnel! Get the detonator!
The DOCTOR runs to a fallen soldier.
DOCTOR
I'm not detonating anything!
Another of CLINE'S men is hit. One of the Hath takes MARTHA. The GIRL picks up the detonator.
CLINE
Grab it! Blow the thing!
The DOCTOR sees the Hath with MARTHA.
DOCTOR
Martha! No, don't!
The GIRL blows the tunnel blocking it and cutting them off from MARTHA-and the TARDIS.
DOCTOR
You sealed off the tunnel! Why did you do that?!
GIRL
They were trying to kill us.
DOCTOR
But they've got my friend.
GIRL
Collateral damage. At least you've still got her. (nods at DONNA) He lost both his men. I'd say you came out ahead.
DONNA
Her name's Martha! And she's not "collateral damage", not for anyone. You got that, GI Jane?
DOCTOR
I'm gonna find her.
CLINE
(aims gun at them) You're going nowhere. You don't make sense, you two. No guns, no marks, no fight in you. I'm taking you to General Cobb. Now move.
INT. TUNNEL, HATH SIDE
MARTHA comes to, lying on the ground on the other side of the tunnel in front of the TARDIS. She pushes herself up and sees that the Hath who had taken her is injured.
MARTHA
Hold on. I've got you. (kneels beside him) Is it your arm, yeah? (the Hath gurgles) Is that a yes? (he nods) Let me examine it. Keep still. Still, yeah? No move. (he nods and she places her hands on his arm) Half-fish, half-human, how am I supposed to know? Is that a shoulder? Feels like a shoulder. I think it's dislocated.
More Hath arrive and aim their weapons at MARTHA who puts her hands up.
MARTHA
I'm trying to help him! I am a doctor and he is my patient and I'm not leaving him. (to injured Hath) Now this is gonna hurt. One...two... three! (pushes his arm back into place)
The other Hath raise their weapons but the injured Hath holds up his hands to stop them. They speak and the Hath lower their weapons.
MARTHA
(stands) Now then...I'm Doctor Martha Jones-who the hell are you?
INT. TUNNEL CORRIDORS
CLINE leads the DOCTOR, DONNA and the GIRL back to the Humans' Base.
DONNA
(to GIRL) I'm Donna. What's your name?
GIRL
Don't know, it's not been assigned.
DONNA
Well, if you don't know that, what do you know?
GIRL
How to fight.
DONNA
Nothing else?
DOCTOR
The machine must embed military history and tactics but no name. She's a generated anomaly.
DONNA
Generated anomaly? Jenny-rated. Well what about that? Jenny!
JENNY
Jenny. Yeah, I like that. Jenny.
DONNA
What do you think, "Dad"?
DOCTOR
Good as anything, I suppose.
DONNA
Not what you'd call a natural parent, are you?
DOCTOR
They stole a tissue sample at gunpoint and processed it, it's not what I call natural parentage.
DONNA
Rubbish! My friend Nerys fathered twins with a turkey baster, don't bother her.
DOCTOR
You can't extrapolate a relationship from a biological accident.
DONNA
Er, Child Support Agency can.
DOCTOR
Look, just 'cause I share certain physiological traits with simian primates doesn't make me a monkey's uncle, does it?
JENNY
I'm not a monkey! Or a child!
They are at the edge of the encampment as they see more soldiers.
DOCTOR
So where are we? What planet is this?
CLINE
Messaline. Well, what's left of it.
INT. HUMAN BASE, MAIN ROOM
CLINE leads them into a large, high space that acts as the Humans' base-an old theatre. He leaves them to look around.
PA
663-75...deceased. Generation 6671, extinct.
There is a generator creating more people off to one side.
PA
Generation 6672-46, deceased. Generation 6680-14, deceased.
CLINE approaches an older man with short grey hair and a grizzled face, GENERAL COBB.
DONNA
(looking around) But this is a theatre.
DOCTOR
Maybe they're doing Miss Saigon. (sits)
DONNA
It's like a...town or a city underground. But why?
CLINE walks over with COBB
DOCTOR
(stands) Gen Cobb, I presume.
COBB
Found in the western tunnels, I'm told, with no marks. There was an outbreak of pacifism in the Eastern Zone three generations back, before we lost contact. Is that where you came from?
DOCTOR
Eastern Zone, that's us, yeah. I'm the Doctor, this is Donna.
JENNY
And I'm Jenny.
COBB
Don't think you can infect us with your peacemaking. We're committed to the fight to the very end.
DOCTOR
Well, that's all right. Can't stay anyway. Gotta go and find my friend.
COBB
That's not possible. All movement is regulated. We're at war.
DOCTOR
Yea, I heard-with the Hath. But tell me, 'cause we got a bit out of circulation, Eastern Zone and all that-so who exactly are the Hath?
INT. HATH BASE
MARTHA is taken to the HATH base which also houses a generator. The one she helped, PECK, tells the others what she did and the Hath then crowd her, touching and stroking her.
INT. HUMAN BASE, MAIN ROOM
COBB is giving the DOCTOR, DONNA and JENNY a little tour and explaining the history of the planet.
COBB
Back at the dawn of this planet, these ancient halls were carved from the earth. Our ancestors dreamt of a new beginning, a colony where Human and Hath lived and worked together.
DOCTOR
What happened?
COBB
The dream died. Broken along with Hath promises. They wanted it for themselves. But those early pioneers, they fought back, they used the machines to produce soldiers instead of colonists and began their battle for survival.
DONNA steps on a cabinet to peer out a window.
DONNA
There's nothing but earth outside. Why is that? Why build everything underground?
CLINE
The surface is too dangerous.
DONNA
Then why build windows in the first place? (points to plaque) And what's this mean?
COBB
The rites and symbols of our ancestors. The meanings...lost in time.
DOCTOR
How long's this war gone on for?
COBB
Longer than anyone can remember. Countless generations marked only by the dead.
DONNA
What, fighting all this time?
JENNY
Because we must. Every child of the machine is born with this knowledge. It's our inheritance. It's all we know-how to fight and...how to die.
INT. HATH BASE
The Hath show MARTHA a projected hologram showing a map of the complex.
MARTHA
Right. So we're...here? (points)
PECK nods.
INT. HUMAN BASE, MAIN ROOM
The DOCTOR is looking at an identical hologram.
DOCTOR
Does this show the entire city, including the Hath zone?
COBB
Yes. Why?
DOCTOR
Well, it'll help us find Martha.
CLINE
We've more important things to do. The progenation machines are powered down for the night shift but as soon as they're active, we could breed a whole platoon from you two.
DONNA
I'm not having sons and daughters by some flipping machine. (looks at JENNY) Sorry, no offence, but you're not-I mean, you're not real.
JENNY
Ha! You're no better than him! I have a body, I have a mind, I have independent thought-how am I not real? What makes you better than me?
COBB
Well said, soldier. We need more like you if ever we're to find the Source.
DOCTOR
Ooh, the Source, what's that then? What's the Source? I like a Source. What is it?
COBB
The Breath of Life.
DOCTOR
And that would be?
CLINE
In the beginning, the Great One breathed life into the universe. And then she looked at what she'd done and she sighed.
JENNY
Hmm. "She." I like that.
DOCTOR
Right. So it's a creation myth.
COBB
It's not myth-it's real. That sight from the beginning of the world was caught and kept as the Source. It was lost when the war started. But it's here somewhere. Whoever holds the Source controls the destiny of this planet.
DOCTOR
(swipes at hologram) Ah! I thought so. (takes out sonic screwdriver) There's a suppressed layer of information in this map. (uses sonic screwdriver on controls) If I can just...
More information appears on the map.
DONNA
What is it? What's it mean?
DOCTOR
See? A whole complex of tunnels hidden from sight.
INT. HATH BASE
The Hath's map changes as well
MARTHA
Hold on, look! (waves them closer) Look.
INT. HUMAN BASE, MAIN ROOM
COBB
That must be the Lost Temple... The Source will be inside-you've shown us the way! And look, we're closer than the Hath. It's ours!
INT. HATH BASE
MARTHA
That's a new map. There's a different set of tunnels.
INT. HUMAN BASE, MAIN ROOM
COBB
Tell them to prepare to move out. We'll progenate soldiers on the morning shift. Then we march. Once we've reached the Temple, peace will be restored at long last.
DOCTOR
Call me old fashioned, but if you really wanted peace, couldn't you just stop fighting?
COBB
Only when we have the Source. It'll give us the power to erase every stinking Hath on the face of this planet.
DOCTOR
Hang on, hang on. A second ago it was "peace in our time", now you're talking about genocide?!
COBB
For us, that means the same thing!
DOCTOR
Then you need to get yourself a better dictionary. When you do, look up "genocide". You'll see a little picture of me there and the caption will read, "Over my dead body"!
COBB
(scoffs) You're the one who showed us the path to victory. But you can consider the irony from your prison cell. Cline, at arms!
CLINE aims his rifle at the DOCTOR and DONNA.
DONNA
Oi, oi, oi! Cool the beans, Rambo!
COBB
Take them. I won't have them spreading treason. And if you try anything, Doctor, your woman dies first.
DOCTOR
We're not a couple.
DONNA
I'm not his woman.
CLINE
Come on, this way.
DOCTOR
I'm gonna stop you, Cobb. You need to know that.
COBB
I have an army and the Breath of God on my side, Doctor. What'll you have?
DOCTOR
This. (taps forehead)
COBB
(to CLINE) Lock 'em up and guard 'em.
CLINE
What about the new soldier?
COBB
Can't trust her. She's from pacifist stock. Take them all. (shoves JENNY)
INT. HATH BASE
The Hath are rejoicing.
MARTHA
But I didn't do anything. (looks around) I think I just started a war.
INT. HUMAN BASE, CELL
The DOCTOR, DONNA and JENNY are locked in a cell. DONNA sees another plaque above the door.
DONNA
More numbers. They've gotta mean something.
DOCTOR
(sitting) Makes as much sense as the Breath of Life story.
JENNY
You mean that's not true?
DONNA
No. (sits beside DOCTOR) It's a myth. Isn't it, Doctor?
DOCTOR
Yes, but there could still be something real in that temple. Something that's become a myth-a piece of technology, a weapon.
DONNA
So the Source could be a weapon and we've just given directions to Captain Nut Job?
DOCTOR
Oh yes.
DONNA
Not good, is it?
DOCTOR
That's why we need to get out of here, find Martha, and stop Cobb from slaughtering the Hath. (looks at JENNY) What-what are you-what are you staring at?
JENNY
You keep insisting you're not a soldier. But look at you-drawing up strategies like a proper general.
DOCTOR
No, I'm trying to stop the fighting.
JENNY
Isn't every soldier?
DOCTOR
Well, I suppose, but that's-that's-technically-I haven't got time for this. (reaches into jacket pocket) Donna, give me your phone. Time for an upgrade. (pulls out sonic screwdriver)
JENNY
And now you've got a weapon!
DOCTOR
It's not a weapon.
JENNY
But you're using it to fight back. I'm gonna learn so much from you. You are such a soldier!
DOCTOR
Donna, will you tell her?
DONNA
Ha! You are speechless! I'm lovin' this. You keep on, Jenny.
The DOCTOR makes a call.
INT. HATH BASE
MARTHA'S phone rings and she answers.
MARTHA
Doctor?
INT. HUMAN BASE, CELL
DOCTOR
Martha, you're alive!
INT. HATH BASE
MARTHA
Doctor! Oh, am I glad to hear your voice! Are you all right?
INT. HUMAN BASE, CELL
DOCTOR
I'm with Donna, we're fine. What about you?
DONNA
And-And Jenny. She's fine, too.
DOCTOR
Yes, right. And-and Jenny. That's the-the woman from the machine. The soldier. My daughter-except that she isn't. She's-she's-anyway, where are you?
INT. HATH BASE
MARTHA
I'm in the Hath camp. I'm okay, but something's going on. The Hath are all marching off to someplace that's appeared...
INT. HUMAN BASE, CELL
MARTHA
(on phone)...on this map thing.
DOCTOR
Oh...that was me. With both armies heading that way, there's gonna be a bloodbath.
INT. HATH BASE
MARTHA
What do you want me to do?
DOCTOR
(on phone) Just stay where you are.
INT. HUMAN BASE, CELL
DOCTOR
If you're safe there, don't move.
INT. HATH BASE
MARTHA
But I can help. (phone disconnects) Doctor? Doctor!
INT. HUMAN BASE, MAIN ROOM
COBB
The doors that have been closed will be open to us now-the door to the Temple, to the Source and to victory!
The soldiers cheer.
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
The Hath march through the tunnels.
INT. HUMAN BASE, MAIN ROOM
The soldiers pass out weapons.
COBB
Come the dawn cycle, we march!
SOLDIERS
We march to war! At arms! We march to war!
INT. HUMAN BASE, CELL
The prisoners hear the chanting.
DOCTOR
(to DONNA) They're getting ready to move out. We have to get past that guard.
JENNY
I can deal with him.
DOCTOR
No, no, no. You're not going anywhere.
JENNY
What?
DOCTOR
You belong here with them.
DONNA
She belongs with us. With you. She's your daughter.
DOCTOR
She's a soldier! She came out of that machine!
DONNA
Oh, yes, I know that bit. Listen, have you got that stethoscope? Give it to me. Come on.
The DOCTOR sighs, reaches into a pocket and gives DONNA the stethoscope. She proceeds to put it on.
JENNY
What are you doing?
DONNA
It's all right. (puts stethoscope to JENNY'S chest) Just hold still. (listens before beckoning the DOCTOR) Listen... (hands DOCTOR the stethoscope) and then tell me where she belongs.
DONNA holds the stethoscope over one side of JENNY'S chest for the DOCTOR to hear the heartbeat then moves it to the other side so he can hear the second. The DOCTOR looks at her coldly before taking off the stethoscope and backing away to lean against the wall.
DOCTOR
Two hearts.
DONNA
Exactly.
JENNY
What's going on?
DONNA
Does that mean she's a-what do you call a female Time Lord?
JENNY
What's a Time Lord?
DOCTOR
It's who I am. It's where I'm from.
JENNY
And I'm from you.
DOCTOR
You're an echo, that's all. A Time Lord is so much more. A sum of knowledge. A code. A shared history. A shared suffering. Only it's gone now-all of it. (breathes deep) Gone forever.
JENNY
What happened?
DOCTOR
There was a war.
JENNY
Like this one?
DOCTOR
(mirthless chuckle) Bigger. Much bigger.
JENNY
And you fought? And killed?
DOCTOR
(nods) Yes.
JENNY
Then how are we different?
The DOCTOR just looks at her.
INT. HATH BASE
MARTHA is with PECK, the Hath she helped. She shows him her mobile.
MARTHA
I need to charge it up. I need power. DO you understand? (the hologram display changes again) There's even more. In 3-D! Oh, you're a clever Hath! So this is where everybody's headed? But look, those tunnels sort of zigzag. If I went up over the surface in a straight line, I'd get there first. (PECK protests) Why not? Are these the readings from the surface? Well, it doesn't look too bad. Nitrogen and oxygen about 80/20. That's fine. Ozone levels are high. And some big radiation spikes, but as long as I'm not out there too long... (PECK doesn't want her to go) I have to find my friends. (walks away and stops) Come on, then. (PECK joins her)
INT. HUMAN BASE, CELL
JENNY goes up to the bars to talk to CLINE.
JENNY
Hey.
CLINE
I'm not supposed to talk to you. I'm on duty.
JENNY
Yeah, I know. Guarding me. So, does that mean I'm dangerous, or that I need protecting?
CLINE
(chuckles) Protecting from what?
JENNY
Oh, I don't know...men like you? (she pulls him to the bars and kisses him, pulling his gun from its holster) Keep quiet and open the door.
The DOCTOR and DONNA are off to the side watching.
DONNA
I'd like to see you try that.
INT. HUMAN BASE, STAIRWAY
JENNY leads they way downstairs. The DOCTOR pulls her back when they spot a guard.
DOCTOR
(whispers) That's the way out. (JENNY pulls out her gun) Don't you dare.
DONNA steps between them.
DONNA
Let me distract this one. I have picked up a few womanly wiles over the years.
DOCTOR
Let's...save your wiles for later. In case of emergency.
The DOCTOR searches his pockets and smiles at what he finds. A clockwork mouse scoots across the floor gaining the guard's attention. When he stoops to pick it up, JENNY knocks him out.
DOCTOR
I was gonna distract him, not clobber him.
JENNY
Well it worked, didn't it?
The DOCTOR bends down to pick up the mouse and takes a copy of the map from the soldier.
DOCTOR
They must all have a copy of that new map. Just stay there, don't hurt anyone. (heads off)
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
The Hath march down a tunnel before halting. Two then use a battering ram to break through the wall.
INT. HATH BASE, STAIRWAY
MARTHA climbs stairs and a hesitant PECK stands at the foot. He's afraid to go outside.
MARTHA
You can stay down here and live your whole life in the shadows, or come with me and stand in the open air. Feel the wind on your face. What's it gonna be? (PECK shakes his head in indecision) It's up to you, but nothing's gonna stop me. (continues up the stairs and opens the hatch)
EXT. MESSALINE SURFACE
Outside is cold, dark and barren, with a howling wind. MARTHA gasps for breath and buttons her jacket. PECK follows out of the hatch. They stand together and look at the landscape.
MARTHA
I knew you couldn't resist it. (PECK gurgles) Er, language! Come on!
INT. HUMAN BASE, CELL
The soldiers find CLINE ties up in the cell and remove his gag.
CLINE
It was the girl. She tricked me. They got away. I'm sorry.
COBB
I waited all my life for this moment, No one's gonna get in my way-certainly not this Doctor. At arms! We march...to war!
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
The DOCTOR is reading the map as they walk through the tunnels.
DOCTOR
Wait! This is it. The hidden tunnel. There must be a control panel. (takes out sonic screwdriver and uses it on the wall)
DONNA
There's another one of those numbers. They're everywhere.
DOCTOR
The original builder must've left them. An old cataloging system.
DONNA
You got a pen, a bit of paper? 'Cause you see, the numbers are counting down. This one ends in 14. (the DOCTOR hands her a small pad and pen) The prison cell said 16.
JENNY
Always thinking, both of you. Who are you people?
DOCTOR
I told you-I'm the Doctor.
JENNY
The Doctor? That's it?
DONNA
That's all he ever says.
JENNY
So you don't have a name either. Are you an anomaly too?
DOCTOR
No.
DONNA
Oh, come off it. You're the most anomalous bloke I've ever met.
The DOCTOR removes a wood plank and finds the control panel.
DOCTOR
Here it is!
JENNY
And Time Lords-what are they for, exactly?
DOCTOR
For? They're not for anything.
JENNY
I travel. Through time and space.
DONNA
He saves planets, rescues civilizations, defeats terrible creatures. And runs a lot. Seriously, there's an outrageous amount of running involved.
DOCTOR
Got it! (the door slides open and he pockets the screwdriver)
COBB
(in distance) Squad 5, with me.
DOCTOR
Now...what were you saying about running?
They enter the side tunnel.
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
COBB and his men aren't far behind.
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
The DOCTOR stops running when he finds their way crossed with laser beams.
DONNA
That's not mood lighting, is it?
The DOCTOR takes the wind-up mouse from his pocket and tosses it at the beams. It explodes.
DONNA
No, I didn't think so.
DOCTOR
Arming device. (goes to some equipment behind them to try and shut it off)
DONNA
(notices another set of numbers) There's more of those. Always eight numbers counting down the closer we get.
DOCTOR
(opens panel) Here we go.
DONNA
You'd better be quick.
JENNY
The General. (makes to run back)
DOCTOR
(stops her) Where are you going?
JENNY
I can hold them up.
DOCTOR
No. We don't need any more dead.
JENNY
But it's them or us.
DOCTOR
It doesn't mean you have to kill them.
JENNY
I'm trying to save your life!
DOCTOR
Listen to me. The killing...after a while, it infects you. And once it does, you're never rid of it.
JENNY
But we don't have a choice.
DOCTOR
We always have a choice.
JENNY
I'm sorry. (runs back)
DOCTOR
Jenny!
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
JENNY takes up position and stands her ground as she hears COBB and the others get closer. She fires when she sees them.
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
DONNA looks at the DOCTOR.
DOCTOR
I told you-nothing but a soldier.
DONNA
She's trying to help.
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
JENNY ducks behind a barrier and pauses, looking at her rifle.
DOCTOR
(in distance) Jenny, come on!
JENNY
I'm coming!
COBB
Cease fire! Cease fire!
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
The lasers switch off.
DONNA
That's it.
DOCTOR
Jenny, leave it! Let's go! (takes DONNA'S hand and they run down the hall)
COBB
(in distance) You're a child of the machine. You're on my side!
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
COBB

JENNY aims her rifle at COBB. She fires at the conduits above him causing steam to block their way. She runs back to the DOCTOR and DONNA.
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
The DOCTOR and DONNA are waiting on the other side of the laser section.
DOCTOR
Jenny, come on! (she appears) That's it!
DONNA
Hurry up!
Just as she's about to run through, the lasers come back on.
DOCTOR
No, no, no, no, no! The circuits looped back!
DONNA
Zap it back again!
DOCTOR
The controls are back there!
JENNY
They're coming!
DOCTOR
Wait! Just-(looks around) There isn't-Jenny, I can't-
JENNY
I'll have to manage on my own. (tosses rifle aside) Watch and learn, Father. (proceeds to turn back handsprings through the crossed beams)
DONNA
(astonished) No way. That was impossible.
DOCTOR
(smiling) Not impossible...just a bit unlikely! (hugs JENNY) Brilliant! You were brilliant!
JENNY
I didn't kill him. General Cobb-I could have killed him, but I didn't! You were right-I have a choice.
COBB and his soldiers arrive on the other side of the lasers.
COBB
At arms!
DONNA and JENNY head off.
DOCTOR
I warned you, Cobb-if the Source is a weapon, I'm gonna make sure you never use it.
COBB
One of us is gonna die today and it won't be me! (fires at the DOCTOR)
EXT. MESSALINE SURFACE
On the surface, MARTHA and PECK trudge along.
MARTHA
Can't be much further.
MARTHA loses her footing and slides down a slope, screaming. She lands in a muddy pool.
MARTHA
(struggling) Help me!
PECK goes down the slope to help.
MARTHA
I'm sinking! I'm sinking! Help me, Peck! Help me! Help me, Peck! I'm sinking! (PECK reaches out) It's no good!
PECK jumps in behind MARTHA and pushes her out. He sinks lower.
MARTHA
Oh no! (PECK is swallowed up) No! (breaks down crying hysterically)
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
The DOCTOR is consulting the map while JENNY and DONNA talk.
JENNY
So you travel together but you're not...together?
DONNA
What? No, no way! No, no, we're friends, that's all. I mean, we're not even the same species. There's probably laws against it.
JENNY
And what's it like, the traveling?
DONNA
Never a dull moment. It can be terrifying, brilliant and funny-sometimes all at the same time. I've seen some amazing things, though. Whole new worlds.
JENNY
I'd love to see new worlds.
DONNA
You will! Won't she, Doctor?
DOCTOR
(turns) Hmm?
DONNA
D'you think Jenny will see new worlds?
DOCTOR
I suppose so. (crooked smile)
JENNY
You mean... You mean you'll take me with you?
DOCTOR
Can't leave you here, can we?
JENNY
(squeals) Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you! (hugs him) Come on! Let's get a move on! (runs ahead)
DOCTOR
(calls) Careful, there might be traps!
DONNA
Kids-they never listen. (notices the DOCTOR looks troubled) Oh, I know that look. See it a lot 'round our way-blokes with pushchairs and frowns. You've got "Dad shock".
DOCTOR
"Dad shock"?
DONNA
Sudden, unexpected fatherhood. Takes a bit of getting used to.
DOCTOR
No, it's not that.
DONNA
Well, what is it, then? Having Jenny in the TARDIS, is that it? What's she gonna do, cramp your style? Like you've got a sports car and she's gonna turn it into a people carrier?
DOCTOR
Donna, I've been a father before.
DONNA
What?
DOCTOR
Lost all that a long time ago. Along with everything else.
DONNA
I'm sorry. I didn't know. Why didn't you tell me? You talk all the time but you don't say anything.
DOCTOR
I know. It's just-When I look at her now, I see them. The hole they left, all the pain that filled it. I just don't know if I can face that every day.
DONNA
It won't stay like that. She'll help you. We both will.
DOCTOR
But when they died, that part of me died with them. It'll never come back. Not now.
DONNA
I'll tell you something, Doctor... something I've never told you before. I think you're wrong.
They hear gunfire. JENNY runs back.
JENNY
They've blasted through the beams. Time to run again. Love the running.
DOCTOR
Love the running.
All three run off.
EXT. MESSALINE SURFACE
MARTHA makes her way alone, shivering in the cold. She looks up and sees a lone tall tower and heads for it.
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
The DOCTOR, DONNA and JENNY stop at a dead end.
DONNA
We're trapped.
DOCTOR
Can't be. This must be the temple. (puts his hands against a wall) This is a door.
DONNA
(sees more numbers) And again. We're down to 12 now.
DOCTOR
(gets a panel open) I've got it!
JENNY
I can hear them!
DOCTOR
Nearly done.
DONNA
These can't be a cataloguing system.
JENNY
They're getting closer!
DOCTOR
Then get back here!
DONNA
They're too similar, too familiar.
JENNY
Not yet.
DOCTOR
Now! (door opens) Got it!
EXT. MESSALINE SURFACE
A door slides open and MARTHA steps inside.
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
JENNY
They're coming! Close the door!
The DOCTOR closes the door behind them.
INT. INDUSTRIAL ROOM
JENNY
That was close.
DOCTOR
No fun otherwise.
INT. INDUSTRIAL ROOM
MARTHA walks in further, still shivering.
INT. INDUSTRIAL ROOM
The DOCTOR, DONNA and JENNY walk deeper into the new building.
DONNA
It's not what I'd call a temple. It looks more like-
DOCTOR
Fusion-drive transport. It's a spaceship!
DONNA
What, the original one? The one the first colonists arrived in?
DOCTOR
Well, it could be, but the power source would have run down after all that time. This one's still powered up and functioning. Come one! (leads the way upstairs)
On the next level, they see someone cutting their way through a door.
JENNY
It's the Hath. That door's not gonna last much longer and if Gen Cobb gets through down there, the war's gonna break out.
DOCTOR
Look, look, look, look, look! Ship's log! (reads) "First wave of Human/Hath colonization of planet Messaline."
JENNY
So this is the original ship.
DONNA
But what happened?
DOCTOR
"Phase One: Construction." They used robot drones to build the city.
DONNA
Does it mention the war?
DOCTOR
Final entry... "Mission commander dead. Still no agreement on who should assume leadership. Hath and Humans have divided into factions." That must be it! A power vacuum. The crew divided into two factions and turned on each other. Start using the progenation machine and suddenly you've got two armies fighting a never-ending war.
JENNY
Two armies that are now both outside.
DONNA has noticed more numbers that are in red lights.
DONNA
Look at that.
DOCTOR
It's like the numbers in the tunnels.
DONNA
No, no, no, but listen. I spent six months working as a temp in Hounslow Library and I mastered the Dewey Decimal System in two days flat. I'm good with numbers. It's starin' us in the face.
JENNY
What is?
DONNA
(turns) It's the date. (she has the DOCTOR'S attention) Assuming the first two numbers are some big, old, space date, then you've got year, month, day. It's the other way 'round, like in America.
DOCTOR
(smacks head) Ohh! It's the new Byzantine Calendar.
DONNA
The codes are completion dates for each section. They finish it, they stamp the date on. So the numbers aren't counting down...they're going out, from here, day-by-day, as the city got built.
DOCTOR
Yes. Oh, good work, Donna!
DONNA
Yeah, but you're still not getting it. The first number I saw back there was 60-12-07-17. Well, look at the date today.
DOCTOR
07-24-no!
JENNY
What does it mean?
DOCTOR
Seven days.
DONNA
That's it! Seven days.
DOCTOR
Just seven days?
JENNY
What do you mean, seven days?
DOCTOR
Seven days since war broke out.
DONNA
This war started seven days ago. Just a week. A week!
JENNY
They said years.
DONNA
No. They said "generations". And if they're all like you, and they're products of those machines...
DOCTOR
Then they can have twenty generations in a day. Each generation gets killed in the war, passes on the legend. Ooh, Donna, you're a genius!
JENNY
But all the buildings, the encampments, they're in ruins.
DOCTOR
They're not ruined-they're just empty...waiting to be populated. They've mythologized their entire history. The Source must be part of that too, Come on! (runs)
As they turn a corner, they see MARTHA.
MARTHA
Doctor!
DOCTOR
Martha! (hugs her) Should have known you wouldn't stay away from all the excitement.
MARTHA
Donna! (hugs her)
DONNA
You're filthy! What happened?
MARTHA
I, uh, took the surface route.
They hear a loud crash from below.
DOCTOR
That's the general. We haven't much time.
DONNA
We don't even know what we're looking for.
MARTHA
(sniffs) Is it me, or can you smell flowers?
DOCTOR
Yes...bougainvillea. I say we follow our nose.
COBB
(in distance) Blocks Seven to Ten, advance! With me!
INT. COLONY SHIP, ATRIUM
The DOCTOR, DONNA, MARTHA and JENNY go upstairs and emerge into a greenhouse filled with exotic plants and palms.
DOCTOR
Oh yes. Yes! Isn't this brilliant?
There is a glowing sphere resting on a pedestal.
DONNA
Is that the Source?
JENNY
It's beautiful.
MARTHA
What is it?
DOCTOR
Terraforming. It's a third generation terraforming device.
DONNA
Why are we suddenly in Kew Gardens?
DOCTOR
'Cause that's what it does. All this, only bigger, much bigger. It's in a transit state. Producing all this must help keep it stable before they finally...
The Hath and Human soldiers enter from opposite ends. The DOCTOR puts his arms out.
DOCTOR
Stop! Hold your fire!
COBB
What is this? Some kind of trap?
DOCTOR
You said you want this war over.
COBB
I want this war won!
DOCTOR
You can't win. No one can. You don't even know why you're here. Your whole history, it's just Chinese whispers. Getting more distorted they more it's passed on. This... (motions to sphere) is the Source. This is what you're fighting over. A device to rejuvenate a planet's ecosystem. It's nothing mystical-it's from a laboratory, not some creator. It's a bubble of gases, a cocktail of stuff for accelerated evolution. Methane, hydrogen, ammonia, amino acids, proteins, nucleic acids. It's used to make barren planets habitable. Look around you-it's not for killing...it's for bringing life...if you allow it. It can lift you out of these dark tunnels and into the bright, bright sunlight. No more fighting. No more killing. (picks up sphere) I'm the Doctor...and I declare this war over!
The DOCTOR throws the sphere to the ground, shattering it and releasing the gases. Both Humans and Hath watch transfixed as it expands above them. CLINE is the first to set down his rifle. Other Humans and the Hath follow suit. Cobb looks at them as if they're mad.
JENNY
What's happening?
DOCTOR
The gases will escape and trigger the terraforming process.
JENNY
What does that mean?
DOCTOR
It means a new world.
JENNY giggles. Out of the corner of her eye, she sees COBB raise his gun.
JENNY
No!
JENNY steps in front of the DOCTOR just as COBB fires. She is hit in the chest. The DOCTOR catches her as she falls and lowers her to the ground.
DOCTOR
Jenny? Jenny?
CLINE and another force COBB to his knees.
DOCTOR
Talk to me, Jenny. (cradles her)
MARTHA checks her pulse.
DONNA
Is she gonna be all right?
MARTHA shakes her head. She and DONNA back away.
JENNY
(whispers) A new world...it's beautiful.
DOCTOR
Jenny, be strong now. You need to hold on. D'you hear me? We've got things to do, you and me. Hey? Hey? We can go anywhere. Everywhere. You choose.
JENNY
That sounds good.
DOCTOR
You're my daughter and we've only just started. You're gonna be great. You're gonna be more than great...you're gonna be amazing. You hear me? Jenny?
JENNY closes her eyes and dies. The DOCTOR holds her close and kisses her forehead. He looks up at MARTHA and DONNA, his eyes hopeful.
DOCTOR
Two hearts. Two hearts just like me. If we wait-If we just wait-
MARTHA
There's no sign, Doctor. There's no regeneration. She like you, but...maybe not enough.
DOCTOR
No. Too much. That's the truth of it. She was too much like me.
The DOCTOR sets JENNY on the ground and kisses her one final time. He then walks over to COBB, takes up his gun and aims it at the general's head. He stands there, breathing deep, his face, a mix of anger and despair. DONNA and MARTHA watch in shock. The DOCTOR lowers the gun and squats beside COBB.
DOCTOR
I never would. Have you got that? I. Never. Would. (stands) When you start this new world...this world of Human and Hath...remember that! Make the foundation of this society...a man who never would! (he tosses away the gun and sits cross-legged by JENNY'S body)
INT. HUMAN BASE, MAIN ROOM
Light floods in from outside as the terraforming progresses. JENNY'S body is laid out on a table. DONNA, MARTHA, CLINE and one of the Hath stand on either side. The DOCTOR stands further back.
MARTHA
It's happening...the terraforming.
DONNA
Build a city, nice and safe underground. Strip away the topsoil and there it is. And what about Jenny?
CLINE
Let us give her a proper ceremony. I think it'd help us. Please.
The DOCTOR nods his agreement.
INT. TARDIS
The DOCTOR'S hand is bubbling as he leans against a buttress.
DOCTOR
Jenny was the reason for the TARDIS bringing us here. We just got here too soon...which then created Jenny in the first place. (moves to jump seat) Paradox. An endless paradox. (looks to MARTHA) Time to go home?
MARTHA
(nods) Yeah. Home.
The DOCTOR puts the TARDIS in flight.
INT. HUMAN BASE, MAIN ROOM
JENNY'S body lies on the table on the stage, bathed in sunlight.
EXT. DAY, STREET
DONNA and MARTHA are walking along the pavement, the TARDIS behind them.
DONNA
Are you sure about this?
MARTHA
Positive. I can't do this anymore. You'll be the same one day.
DONNA
Not me. Never! How can I ever go back to a normal life after seeing all this? (looks back at the DOCTOR following) I'm gonna travel with that man forever.
DONNA and MARTHA hug.
MARTHA
Good luck.
DONNA
You too.
The DOCTOR catches them up and he and MARTHA continue on.
DOCTOR
We're making a habit of this.
MARTHA
And you think it'd get easier. All those things you've been ready to die for...I thought for a moment you'd finally found something worth living for.
DOCTOR
Oh...there's always something worth living for, Martha.
MARTHA
(hugs him) Bye, Doctor.
DOCTOR
Bye...Doctor Jones.
The DOCTOR and DONNA walk back to the TARDIS and MARTHA runs into her house with a smile.
INT. HUMAN BASE, MAIN ROOM
CLINE and one of the Hath are preparing JENNY'S body. CLINE places a pillow under her head while the Hath covers her with a sheet. Her mouth opens and she expels a light similar to the terraforming gases. CLINE leans in closer just as JENNY gasps and opens her eyes.
JENNY
Hello, boys. (smiles)
INT. COLONY SHIP
CLINE and the Hath run down a passageway as they try to find JENNY.
CLINE
The shuttle. (runs to comms) Jenny, what are you doing?
JENNY
(over comms) Sorry, can't stop. What are you gonna do...
INT. SHUTTLE
JENNY
...tell my dad?
CLINE
(over comms) But where are you going?
JENNY
Oh, I've got the whole universe. (shuttle takes off) Planets to see, civilizations to rescue, creatures to defeat...and an awful lot of running to do.
